Look at current production helis and see what they do, pick the designs you like from what you see and combine them into one heli.

Sounds too heavy... but to know for sure, check out common engines for 600 size helis, look up the engine specs, specifically weight. You can get away with your engine being heavier if you're not doing 3D but it can't be like 4x heavier.

There are a lot of blanks you should probably fill in first before anyone's advice here could be of much use to you.

There are some really smart guys here if you are speaking of gearing but there are so many unknowns.

What type of flying are you trying to do with this heli? Scale? 3D? FAI? When you say "custom" do you mean doing a fully customized build from the ground up or just transplanting that 42cc engine into an existing machine?

I'm not positive, but a 42cc seems like it might be a bit too chunky for 600/50 class helicopter.

Please enlighten us on more details, I think this is place that can get you pointed in the direction of success with your build. Good luck

Have you ever built an RC helicopter before? Have you ever flown an RC helicopter. How about a bit of your background.

Not sure of your understanding of helicopter fundamentals. Here is a spot where the basic fundamentals of helicopter theory by Colin Mills.
While you don't need to understand every mathematical detail, if you are truly building from scratch it is very important to have a clear understanding of pitch/cyclic/yaw fundamentals. Of course you could use swash assembly from an existing design. Designing your own swash can be done, but very difficult to get a reasonable and reliable unit for your helicopter.

This would be a very interesting project to follow, keep us informed of your progress (with pictures), lots of help on RunRyder.

I suggest learning to fly properly, building existing designs for a couple of years and then moving towards design. You are trying to start at the top of the mountain.

Well, he has been at it for a few years it appears. Doesn't look like he's moved past the initial question, though.

Do you know why it crashed?

That's where you should start before building another one...answer the questions: Why did it crash? Pilot error or mechanical failure?

From the sound of things...it could be a combination of both.

Good luck and please be careful with whatever comes out of your next endeavor.
