Hello all,

I'm a fixed wing pilot that's once again been bitten by the heli bug...need something different once in a while.

I've been flying micro CP helis for a few years, such as the Nano CPX that is costing me a fortune in tiny motors! I've also been practicing a bit on the sims.

I have a stretched 180CFX on it's way for backyard bashing and I'm in the market for my first big heli to fly at the club. I'm kind of stuck on the TREX 470LP super combo currently...can't beat the price, plus it has decent quality hardware and electronics and it's well supported in my area. As much as a used heli appeals to me, I want to do this first one as a new kit because I believe building it and setting it up will be invaluable for crash repair and troubleshooting down the road. I've also heard great things about the Gaui X3 but it's not sold/supported near me and if this is anything like fixed wing it's probably worthwhile to go as large as budget will allow.

For what's it's worth I just switched everything I own over to FrSky from Spektrum and I'm currently using the Horus X10S with OpenTx. I also already purchased a K-Bar to start learning FBL programming and Soko Heli setup kit to go over my little 180 and for when I build a kit.

Looks like this place has a wealth of knowledge, I welcome any input.

Cheers!

Cory

Welcome to RR !

Looks like you've done your homework, pretty unusual for someone just starting out with helis..... KUDOS to you...

Not much more to add other than spending as much time on the sim as you can.... but, you already know that.....

Also, don't forget to look at the FrSky forums regarding your radio/openTx and there are a ton of videos on youtube regarding anything you can think of heli related.....

Been there, done that and old enough to know better.....

You don't mention where in Canada.

I've used my Horus for one season and am still loving it. I use the 4in1 module so still have spectrum receiver on one of my helis. I was surprised to see that the 180cfx actually has telemetry.

I can't imagine how I ever survived without telemetry in the past.

Welcome aboard.

West end also (stittsville). I fly at ORCC.

You will have to come by the ORCC auction on 6Feb, at the McNabb Community Center near Bronson and the 417.

I'm in the Kitchener/Waterloo area.

I'm currently using a homemade DSMx module but I have a multi protocol module on the way.

What telemetry does the 180 have? I haven't used telemetry with a module before, do you do sensory discovery the same as you would with a FrSky receiver?

Cheers!

The homemade DSMx module (made from a TX module ripped from dx4-6) is unidirectional. The 4in1 TX module is usually setup to default as bidirectional communication to the radio. Horus needs no modifications but some openTX radios need modifications to support bidirectional. With a bidirectional connection between the 4in1 and radio, as you guessed, you simply do sensor discovery the same as when using a frsky rx.

I don't have my radio in front of me, but I believe you get rx battery & rssi. You definitly get a few values that display the PID gains. There is a b180 manual that describes advanced setup using the displayed gains and stick movements to adjust the gains.

"cosmith"

Welcome to a whole new world my friend. Flying Helis is like living on a different planet. Its a whole different animal.

To quote Jaun. No not really. I thoroughly researched and read the forums like home work everyday after work and SIM'd till I even bought my first bird back in 2006.

You're gonna have to get a video of you using the Soko on your 180cfx.
I think the Soko out weighs that heli. I love my Soko and it works fine on 450 and larger.
