So I am in need of a torque tube and MA are out of stock so I was thinking of making my own up but not only is it a special carbon rod (wound) it is 7.5mm diameter!

I am thinking of making it in aluminium and 8mm diameter and making my own or modifying the existing ends and boring out the bearing sleeve.

Has anyone done anything similar? Is it ok to use aluminium?

I have a Bergen aluminum torque tube upgrade on an X-Cell 30 that is now stretched for a 46. Bergen has been using aluminum arrow shafts for torque tubes on their helis for years. They work, great!

Has anyone done anything similar? Is it ok to use aluminium?
I made some for my stretched G20 a While back... I used aluminum arrow shafts.. the issue I ran into was getting a long enough arrow shaft for my use in a 700 class model.

but if you can find them, they work just fine. its making the bearing mounts work thats a pain. I had to make bushings from acetal rod on a lathe then glue them on so they would stay put when assembling the boom.

I Also used CF arrow shafts for the boom mounts...

Aluminum arrow shafts will even work for landing skids as well if you dont have to bend them too much for the front part...

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Is Bergen still going?
Yes. While they've changed focus from us modelers to the industrial arena, Chris Bergen pops in here to answer questions. I would doubt, though, that they'd have any X-Cell upgrade parts, at this point. They do support their helicopters. I've placed a couple orders this year, for parts.

I hope this helps and good luck on your search. I have purchased from them and they are excellent to deal with. They have 10 too 15% off from time to time also. You would have to pay the shipping cost as I would have to believe you are aware of.

Quick update,

I got some Easton XX75 2013 arrow shafts, turned some ends, bored out the bearing sleeve to 8mm and it works a treat!

I did however discover that the boom on my heli is 800mm (31.5 inches)! Is that the Xcell 60 boom? Anyway it's fine as im only running 690's and I have a 33" boom, TT and tail control rod on the way from MA once they have more stock. It's good to know I can use the arrow shafts and save a lot of money over the standard TT assembly.

Yup. 31.5" is the original 60 boom. I believe the original blades were 660 or 670mm. I'd have to go measure them. The 33" boom didn't come out until we started running 80 and later 90 engines. Anyway, if you have a torque tube you have one of the new upgraded fancy X-Cells. That upgrade kit didn't come out for a year or two.

As a side note... Be sure to "pin" the boom at the front end. They had a propensity to slide out and disengage the torque tube drive. If yours isn't already pined I can post a picture.

Thanks guys. Yes I pinned it at the front with an M3 x 6 button head right between the rear most clamp bolts. When I got it one of the front boom clamp sides was in the wrong way, I presume whoever built it had done this on purpose so the lip for stopping the boom going too far in was pressing against the boom and thus clamping it harder. I have also made carbon plates to go on the outside of the frame around the 4 boom clamp bolts as the frame was bending around the boom so wasn't getting full clamp force.
