Hi Every one

I am in the process of building a giant scale RC helicopter, It's as big as a YAMAHA RMAX (

Watch at YouTube

The craft is almost 85Kg and powered by a 20hp engine.

I am now confused which Tail Gyro to use, I have chosen Futaba GY520. Any body please comment if this is okay? Or should I choose some other gyro.

The distance between the main rotor and the tail rotor axis is about 2 meters.

Note: Please comment only about the gyro, Kindly don't bother about the other stuffs.

Is the machine FBL or Flybarred. If it’s flybarred I’d go with the Futaba GY 701. Simply because there are more options available to you and there is a screen so you can make programming easier.

I did think the 701 gyro will only work with certain tail.servos which are normally 4kilo.

The older gyros like 401 or 502 will work with any servo.. you don't need a fast tail servo for that sized model you need a powerful tail servo with high kilo torq

The GY-520 seems like a good choice as it can also handle analog servos.

Simple mechanical adjustment in Rate mode.

It sure would be nice if you would share additional details of your project. Us "Rotorheads" appreciate such.

Where does it say that the 701 cannot use analog sevos? Where does it say that the 701 can only use certain servos?

Hello Again

I've heard the 701 cannot support analog servos, and I found a spec that supports that, please check for the image attached here with.
This giant heli works with high torque analog servos and has a bell stabilizer bar, the one that you find in Bell 47 and Bell UH-1, and not the Bell-Hiller Stabilizer bar that you find in FB-Helis.

With the replies that I've got so far, I guess I can go with Futaba - GY520.

Many Thanks
Mohan

Read the 701 manual. All Futaba gyros support analog but in any event they’ll all work. Good luck.

The 701 can handle analog servos.

Its practically a 520 but with a governor and the only limitation I see for its use is that it can only go as low as 1000rpm.

Thanks for your replies, I already have a Governor and I believe GY-720 can also be bought without a Governor. But I would like to know if GY-520 suits my requirement without much compromise, because the requirement is not high response, the craft is very stable and the inputs are going to be gentle, it's just that the moment arm is so large for a RC helicopter. Main rotor shaft axis and the Tail rotor shaft axis is separated by 2 meters and that's the only issue to be afraid of. I don't want to have surprises when I use the GY-520.

Some of you might have dealt with it and with your experience if you say yes I would confidently go behind it. I don't want GY-701 for some reasons.

Barvarian Demon 3x

After watching the video, you can see that the heli has a flybar..(with paddles)
The 3x will work as a tail only gyro, as the machine in the video would use.. or as a stabilization system if your project heli will have a flybarless setup as used on the Bell 47 and UH 1...as you mentioned..
The reason I suggest this unit is that it has settings for 2 m machines..
I have this in several of my larger scale models, and am quite happy with the results.. and very easy setup..

Hello Stan

Thanks for your suggestion on Barvarian Demon 3x. But I use a Flybared heli here, It is just that the fly bar does not have paddles it just have weights at the ends (Please check the rotor again of all 2 bladed bell helicopters, you are sure to find fly bar that has weights instead of paddles). I also see that 3x offers are all FBL, so it would be great if you suggest any other that is only a tail gyro.

Which Gyro

Hi Mohan

The 520 was one of the best tail gyros that I used before FBL.. I am sure it would do the job for you.. I always ran a digital tail servo with it..

But the 3x can be setup for FB or FBL.. I just did one for a friend on a Vario benzin with flybar.. I really like that way these work and are the "latest" technology..
My 1/4 scale Bell 47 had just the weighted flybar (locked in position) and I used the 3x on it and was quite happy with it.. if the bar on yours is functional then I would agree that it would be considered a flybar/stabilizer bar..

Per your info, a GY401 would most likely do the job for you...just do your mechanical setup in rate mode and they go to heading hold.. you will need a good location with minimal vibration... just something else to consider..

Let us know how you make out... good luck... Stan (and we need pic's!!)

Thanks Stan, I will post pictures soon. All my servos are big analog ones and the speed is moderate. This bell Stabilizer bar is functional, based on your advice I have ordered GY - 520, let's hope it works well.

I was going to try the GY-520 at one point and wanted to program with this ;
https://www.servocity.com/futaba-ciu-2-usb-interface

I went with the Spartan ds760 and found that the Spartan-link was something that was helpful with programming.
