Been in the hobby a long time and the last few years I have gravitated to scale jets but I still like helis. I have done the 3D thing but lately I find myself leaning more to the scale side of the house. That being said the number of manufacturers for scale helis in various scale seems vary limited. Besides Vario are there any other scale heli companies out there for the larger 90 plus?

Sadly the whole RC Helicopter participants is lacking. I see the younger or millenial generation showing very little or zero interest in scale, especially taking the time to learn and build one. There is so much that goes into building scale rc helis.

I have done a lot in the scale jet arena with vendors and there are so many options. Trying to push some towards scale helis.

Take a look at Roban and Scaleflying. The interest in the states isn't near what it is in other countries. One also has to factor the time, skill and cost required.

PKM is a good source. They do 500 and 700 fuselages. Their web site is not so good, but the FB page works for making contact.

There are other options than Vario....

but in general one can separate the kits in two "broad" categories...
Quick fix... and a builder's kit...

Quick fix (not meant in a degrading way) is a kit which is simple to assemble... add electronics and program the radio and off you fly...
Roban is a great example of this type of kit.. but so is Century and some others...

Builder's kit requires a LOT MORE WORK...
it comes unassembled... unpainted and without any surface details at all ...
Vario, Baumann and some others come to mind...

the thing is... it all depends on the TIME you have available...

I suck with my hobby time lately... hence my (usually) a one year project is going on the third year... I would have been better off with a quick fix but I tend to punish myself... so all builder's kit's for me...

FunKey also make many different 550, 600 and 700 sized scale fuselages that fit many different mechanics. They make Jet Rangers, Long Rangers, Airwolfs, Bell 222, H 500, MD 500, AS350, AS355, Augusta A109a, etc. You can get them unpainted with a grey primer applied or painted in various colours.

That is some nice scale models and a nice site to fly at.. although I don't participate anymore in scale events we have some good ones here, those that I personally know of are Eynsford, Redlodge, Southern Heli Fest and Charmouth.. only a couple tend to post pics on here, and without the MHW magazine here in UK which used to do write ups, people forget, I know I do, although we do have BMFA which used to highlight upcoming events.

(apologies in advance for any UK Scale events I missed)

All The Best

I would like to jump in here.

It sounds like “lacking” might just be a simple miss understanding. Does the scale heli hobby have as large a following as Jets.. Nope.. will it ever.. Nope… are we OK with it.. proly not! I for one would like more.
Is it in worse shape then its been in years past in the US.. not really..
If you looks back in the years scale helis have NEVER had “large” following in the US. Yes.. seems odd to me too…
But.. the light in the distance is….
The US has some VERY good events for those so inclined.
We also have some VERY nice MFG support “IF” you know where to look.. (I to wish It was more main stream)
Events.
Joels R has one on the east coast
Darrel has one center belly
Upper FL has one
The west coast has one
We have IRCHA and the “SCALE HILL”
And of course, we have the NATS!
Yep.. It’s a HUGE country and that’s all we have.. or one could say.. thank god we have those!
Supply’s.. we have a few.. .. more important is we have the right people in the right places.
So.. we ask.. Please JOIN IN and be a part for BETTER scale flying!

Can't agree more.
3 to 4 dozens at most when you browse around 3 o 4 forums. Old timers are mostly old school (in terms of electronic/computer technology) except Joe R.
Most stay away from smaller size scale; load up the trailers a couple times a year unless you have a good size property next to your house (a couple people do), and a barn size garage with no cars in it.

Unlike Europeans they welcome both small and "huge" size.

I dont get that feeling about size. I have never been turned away or not made buddy's because of the size of my helis. (all been 600s to this point)

The guys even like me and i LOVE NITRO BIRDS TOO!..lol

Truth is the nats winner was a 600 size machine. (not the first time)

Us scale guys LIKE EM ALL!

I do have some thoughts on contesting helicopters that I hope to prove this summer but we will see. Size is VERY important but not the way you think it might be...

600 size and Nitro (OS50 Max FP engine) and very scale, just adding a few final fittings, then decals and a little weathering and it will be out there.

Pic is not the best quality hence you can't see most of the rivets etc. More pics to follow and these will be taken outdoors where I can get the best light to show off the details once it is fully completed

2nd pic shows a better close up. The front sensors have been completed since this pic was taken. The windscreen wipers will be fitted once the front screen is permanently fixed in place

A separate update will posted up with all the weapons fittings.

+1, Grim.
I know that our small club here in Panama City FL are honored and proud to be able to hold one of the very few scale heli only events. It is the type of event that most all heli scaler's like to have. A several day, laid back get together with a BBQ, and visit and dine on the Gulf of Mexico, in our case.
There is a lot of time and love that goes into these heli's and to have a place to relax and share with others all of our hard work in these heli's, is a great time had by all.
2018 will be only our 2nd event, but as long as I'm still kicking, the event will be planned annually.
