AT&T is using rc helicopters and drones for emergency cell service. Called the flying COW (cell on wings)

wow... fire the idiot that came up with that idea...

I can see it now.... "hey guys cell service is up!... you got 20 minutes to make your call... GO!"

it would have been smarter to use an ATV with a deployable helium balloon to carry the electronics and a ground based power supply.

yeah maybe...its cool to see a chopper being used although the program also uses drones

having moved plenty of acetylene tanks, I think this would be more mobile and quicker to deal with than balloons.

They're tethered to the ground so no reason they can't supply electric from the ground and therefore runtime is not limited to 20 minutes.

Tethered. exactly... then there is no point in using a drone or Heli... why use more power to lift the array and add a load of unnecessary complexity and loss of reliability?

just use a balloon, tethered to an ATV that supplies everything...

this is simply trying to apply a "thats sooo cool" Drone or Heli to a problem that already has a much simpler solution that is more robust and dependable.

Hey RM3....helium and acetylene are kept in similar tanks that when loaded with acetylene weigh about 220 lbs

Oxygen tanks are no lightweights either. The amount of helium needed to lift a pound requires a balloon of about a meter round, at 80cf or so, you don't get a lot of refills, nor will many airlines want to carry the tanks.

Good for google, here is someone using a heli in 2017...and you are bitchin'. Why not just appreciate it instead of making my return to this forum after a couple of years a reminder of why I thought it was populated by a bunch of dumb monkeys whose opinions contribute jack sh-t to the advancement of the hobby.

Great concept. Thanks for sharing.

Doing a little research on specs found out that:
* 5 watts per radio
* Carries 4 radios
* 4,000 connections per radio
* Improved antennas with higher gain and optimum orientation
**Tropical storm capable such as heavy rain and 45kt winds
*Lighter radio equip
*Easier deployment ( and no doubt quicker deployment given size )

Keeping at or below 400ft, no FAA permit required.

Couldn't find cost comparison to ballons (still under experimentation) which is also used by AT&T

Glad that the people affected by such a devastating hurricane are finally going to be able to communicate with not only loved ones but as well as with the volunteers and or public personnel assisting in their much needed recovery.

~~Enjoying the hobby one flight at a time~~

well with a response like that... its no wonder you left.

and really... a 220 lb helium tank... so? your already hauling around a 1200lb trailer.

all I said was there are "Simpler" means to accomplish the same task. dont go get your panties all in a wad.

anyways there are already rapid deployment cell towers... deliverable via helicopter OR wheeled, here is a tower system, just stick the array to it:

Watch at YouTube

not as cool as a drone... and not as light... but already tested to be more reliable.

Welcome back

The forums are here to share ideas and opinions. Let's get along by not reading things in a negative manner. We don't have to agree all the time at the same level.

Let's have fun while we can.

ICUR12 we've been on this forum since it began...know how it works, I also have watched RM3 over the years and he still irritates me. as a matter of principal...as you can see readily.

Theres always some know it all when called out has to save face and makes a couple of jackass posts like RM3...I'm as guilty as doing it too before. I am not going to take it on here every ****ing time I'm here anymore.

Anyways, I hope this website can continue as something more than shell of itself. Its always strayed off topic more than stayed on but that is the reason it is kryptonite in the hobby industry.

A thread here used to make page 2 in a day, but now it takes a month in the main discussion, there is something seriously wrong with RR and needs to be fixed.

Since 2012 our hobby has been in a steady decline. And a lot of forums are slowing down due to alternative media.
Forums have been useful but their popularity is diminishing as well.

As for those that irritate you ,RR has an ignore feature that works. They won't be able to post in your topic.
