Thanks for the replies regarding a shuttle and a 50 engine. Did not realize the main shaft was so small . Same as a Protos 500

Still even with a 37 it should be fun?

OS 32SX-H = 1.2bhp at 18,000 rpm
OS 37SZ-H = 1.4bhp at 18,000 rpm per manual

I think the old OS 50FSR-H was about 1.4bhp, so I think a .37 should be enough for fun

Or convert to electric my friend - there is more than enough torque on 1 x 6S pack for fun... A 6S lipo sets the CofG up nicely too!

No more gooey machines either

Gooey machines are not that bad. I still have two T-rex 700's that are nitro. They don't seem to be bad at all after a flight and I do fly electric most of the time. Speaking of time (LOL) one flight on my 700 nitro equals four 5000mah battery charges on my 700 eletcrics.
I think my longest flying heli's were EVO 30's. They were the same as a EVO 50 but ran 550mm blades. I loved them. I had one that I flew so much I wore out the ball links and three engines. I remember 20 minute flights over and over. A lot of just relaxing fun.

I’ve seen SDX 30’s on ebay that come with an OS37. The big fuel tank would give great flight times. These could be upgraded to 50 later on or alternatively just buy an SDX 50 from the start. The OS50SX-H Hyper is by far the best engine I’ve ever owned. I’ve never owned an SDX, just Sceadu’s and really loved them. Great helicopters. The SDX I assume is better again.

Who doesn’t love cutting a canopy! I buggered my Freya canopy by accidentally drilling far to big a hole for one of the grommets. I ended up upgrading to the FRP Eagle 3 canopy. I do like the plastic canopys though as they are indestructible and also have a window.

Converting a nitro to electric is sacrilege IMO

I Have a 50 already considering a 30 for the long flights low fuel consumption

I just found a box in the cellar that has old Shuttle upgrade parts. Gold aluminum mixing arms, gold clutch and pipes.
Now I have a Classic and Classic hop up parts. I am sure I have blades around here some where.

Nice! Gold anodized parts and wood blades I hope This thread has made me smile many times now and helped me to remember what getting into this hobby was all about and the mystique it held for me back when. Thanks Paul.

Buzz, you gave me a set of blades for my Raptor 30 that I haven't used yet. Would you like them back for the Shuttle? My pleasure to do so if you can put them to use.

Well I got another Classic.
My son gave back a EVO 50 that I had given him when he wanted to get back into flying. It's still like new and I have a 30 conversion set up for it.
I realty liked the EVO's they were my favorite. I have been working on it for two days and I am getting close. I am going to use the old but new 783 JR radio that I got with the Shuttle. I need to order a battery with the black connector and I will be trying it out.

My first rc heli was a Sceadu Evo. The quality of the parts were extraordinary.

My first RC heli was an Esky Belt Cp...

The quality of the Parts was horrific....

But it did get me in the air... the 3D was impressive when thrown overhand with the right arm.

I've been busy dealing with other non-hobby priorities. I haven't flown in over a year.

I periodically check and keep all my batteries at storage charge and update all my devices' firmware.

I'll eventually get some time to go fly, but for now, that all has to wait.

I really miss the days where I'd check out the forum several times a day, there were constantly new helis and toys coming out. I know at my club it was big into helis yeas ago, now I rarely see one. I got into drones/aerial photography and now dare I say I'm into planes. Mainly because they are affordable and don't need constant work like the helis. I still love rc helis but I'm taking a break. I hope things get better for the industry.

Reading some of these comments have made me smile to.

I learnt on a Raptor 30 v1, then moved onto an Xcell sport and Fury Extreme with a tempest head. I still fly the Excel to this day.. had a very good friend help me dial in the clutch housing and ensure those 2 drive pins went into the rubber dampners correct.. I do wonder how many would be willing to put that kind of effort in these days in a world of bolt and fly..

Great thread folks.. Good to hear of evo, calibers, I even had a go on an old Nexus the other week lol.. i also have just got hold of an Eco 7 in foamy jetranger fuse. When weather gets a bit better will fly it.. in meantime for quickness I'm just flying my plank Cooger... which I enjoy..

All The Best

Do the modern "unbox - assemble and fly" Helis require the attention to detail and the upgrade opportunities the older/original Kit Helicopters needed.. (together with the conversations generated!)

Do the new machines even generate the enthusiasm to discuss differences in performance and Bling... Or is it just simply the old blood moving away, not being replaced by new blood.

In the UK here quite a few Model clubs have folded and other struggle for members - even to the point of advertising for members..

MHW going Bi Monthly then folding must have been a pointer for something..

yeah to some extent... for me the excitement has really tapered off... I can fly 3D... not crazy 3D, just the usual basic 3D. I dont feel the need to push the limits and break parts like I used to. I see no point in putting my finances through that anymore. And my guess is that is what is happening to alot of others as well... it costs money to learn, and still costs money to fly even if you dont dumb thumb it as parts always break when the heli is at least 30 feet in the air. and when money is tight, you want models that are either cheap to fix or more durable in a crash... the Drone has alot of those qualities... So they have either moved on to drones or simply reduced the feverish attitude they once had.

The new generation doesnt seem to show much interest. My son is in High school, His friends once saw my 4 helis... two were big gassers. They showed more interest in the pizza delivery car that drove by... they show more interest in video games and easy/fast entertainment. Not devotion to any skill development, especially one that normally requires them to go somewhere and physically interact with the outdoors... they especially disdain anything that drains the already near empty wallets they have... unless of course its sporting a pair of boobs.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...
