I just upgraded my RF6.5 SIM to the new RF8 SIM on an older VAIO laptop that uses Win 7 Pro OS with a GeForce GT425M graphics card. I chose to get the new RF8 Interlink X TX, too.

Had previously tried to upgrade to the RF X, but RF X wouldn't even install on this laptop because of the older graphics card.

RF8 installed properly without incident....and after registration, RF8 S/W upgrades were easily installed.

In addition, you can use an external DVD drive to install RF8 on your PC if your internal DVD drive is not working.

Haven't had a chance to determine how much "better" RF8 is than RF6.5, but I needed a backup SIM just in case....

And you don't need the latest and greatest gaming PC hardware to install and run RF8.

The menu is slightly different, but the channel mapping is the same....so it was easy to set up RF8 to use my JR12X TX for SIMming.

Also, RF8 successfully operates the wireless VStabi VControl system using a VC TX and the VC simulator unit(as does RF6.5)....which is really slick.

Thanks for the write up. I've been using RF 7.5 and I've been happy with it. Very happy with it. Happy to the extent I've been able to avoid RF-X and I'll need some strong encouragement to buy RF8. I'll be waiting to hear how RF8 flies.

I forgot to add....

The command "showmethemoney"...while not mentioned...still works in RF8 as it does in RF6.5.

When activated, this command shows how much it costs when you crash a particular aircraft.

To activate this function....using the keyboard....

1) Press "~" to invoke the command line

2) Enter "showmethemoney" <CR>

3) Press "~" to return to the main screen

Funny. I did not know about this functionality in RF. I just tried it and it works in 7.5.

When I was a kid the local hobby shop had an early computer set up and it ran Dave Brown's flight sim. It was a terrible sim by today's standards with poor graphics. It was hard to fly and easy to crash. The DB sim would spit out a crash value after each "mishap". I found it enormously entertaining but wondered how many potential customer spent 20 minutes with the sim and concluded they couldn't afford to the loose the money the simulator reported they might have spent. You could see on their faces, "lucky I didn't get in this hobby".

Are there other Real Flight script commands I don't know about?

I only found out about that command when somebody posted it at RR....

That function also keeps track of crash costs with each "named" aircraft you use, too.....Have several....each with separate "crash cost tracking"...

Was trying to learn tail down, upright and inverted funnels with "bailouts" into upright and inverted backwards flight....and have racked up ~$250,000 on one heli to learn to do that.....LOL

And if you looked at the crash costs it reports....it seems like it's about 3x times too low....even with inflation....

There are many cool custom helis available from the knifedge swap pages.

They are located in the RF7 and RF7.5 sections.....and are compatible with RF8.

They work well with my JR12X TX and also with my VControl TX....once the channel mapping is sorted out.

I'm liking this.....

For those that might find this thread and who are new to Real Flight:
http://www.knifeedge.com/forums/downloads.php

To use the aircraft and airfields available from the above site, download the file you're interested in, and then from within RealFlight, Click-Simulation, then Import, then RealFlight Archive. Navigate to where you downloaded and select the new file.

+1

And remember, when "importing" a new aircraft, you must import the "EA" file.....that is, as file with the suffix "EA".

DO NOT unzip it....just import it....

Then select that aircraft to use......RF will perform the unzipping, etc.
