Nothing has changed....was like that in the 70s....except no cell phones nor calculators.
So those that excel in school are those that can weed thru the BS professors, play the game and work smart, sit in front and ask real questions and have no fear of ridicule in class.
And to learn how to learn yourself.

Exactly...

you pay for the degree... what you learn is totally up to you.

The degree has three purposes: to Brag/hang up on wall, put you in debt, and to land you the interview... thats it... the rest in life is up to you.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

And the sad, disturbing part . . . corporations, more and more, require a degree to be hired.

It's getting to the point that you need to be "indoctrinated" by some educational institution get hired.

I once had a PHD working for me. (no, I didn't hire him) He had trouble telling the business end of a screw driver (figuratively speaking). He had the memorized theory but couldn't apply it. He didn't last long.

That's his fault....not that of a PHD.

And has nothing to do with indoctrination....

In a PHD program, one is doing a research project.....all the theory has been learned previously.....during undergrad studies.

I didn't ask about his dissertation, just how to accomplish certain mechanical design requirements.

very true... Ive met really "dumb" PhD's and really smart PhD's that I didnt know had any such degree (they didn't flaunt it) cause everyone simply called them by a nick name or first name all the time. granted these types are rare... Most of the time they simply have weird social interaction techniques...

I often wonder to what extent our educational system is ruining the true capability of many of our bright kids.
I didn't ask about his dissertation
most of the time these dissertations are nothing more than approved science projects intended to help with a professors current research. Often they are simply ment to keep you in school for an additional 4 plus yeas and bury you in over $75K of additional debt over the $50K you already have from the undergrad level.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Doesn't matter....

The fact is that the "theory" that you mentioned is learned during undergraduate studies...and not during the PHD program.

That I know from personal experience...

The person you mention lacks whatever he lacks.....and that's his fault alone....and not some university program, etc.
