Been a member here for over a decade but haven't been to the site in a while. Is this a sign of our hobby or just this site? I remember there used to be a huge sponsor list running down the left hand column. Now there are like 3 ads. Yikes. I know rc helis have taken a hit but I didn't know it was this bad.

I sure hope things rebound.

Be sure to have a look at the adds, if you need a charger, a motor... you know where to look first.

Ohh, now I am feeling depressed!

I just got back into the hobby. Lots of things have changed. Had to buy some old parts to get me started then progress slowly over the new stuff. I am doing ok!

I, for one, don't think it's depressing. Hell, I built 2 helis this year. I'm still having fun, like every one of you.

This has been discussed a bit lately, and I agree with the spirit of those other threads. I think the hobby is just going back to normal, for the most part. We saw a huge explosion of incoming pilots there for a few years and over the past few years it's kind of tapered off. The die-hards remain. Some took a break, some had life-altering circumstances, but for the most part it's the true heli guys that are still in it.

Sure, the multi-rotors have been the big boom, but seriously, how many die-hard heli pilots left to exclusively fly a multi? Very few, I'd wager.

At any rate, fly your heli with your pals, enjoy every minute of it, have fun and come back to tell us about it (preferably with pics and/or video!).

I feel special... Not many can pull it off what we do. Plus I kinda like the echo in here. In a sea of drones we stand out like, like, well like a heli.

Just because Mark Ryder doesn't have ad sponsors on this website doesn't mean in no way the hobby is dead. I believe he lost a lot of supporters when the whole deal of RR closing down because of his divorce deal. By no means does it depress me! I wish I was more active at flying but maybe someday I will get back into it hardcore again.

It not only caught my crash on camera, but it picked up the mess and re-built it for me. Soon i can stay home while the drone flys my heli. Oh fun!

People want instant gratification. When u can pick up a quad copter and fly the crap out it first try compared to a heli where it takes time to learn any aspect of the hobby that's the problem. But for me that's what I like I get bored quick and with helis good luck getting bored....

R/C Heli industry

Hello! I was introduced to R/C aircraft by my father back in 1967. In 1980, I flew my first R/C helicopter. I took a break for a while, however model aircraft is in my blood, so I came back 6 years ago and it's been full steam ahead ever since. No more competing though, just flying for fun and relaxation, bottom line!

The hobby is alive and well but there are peaks and troughs with this industry and I have seen many changes over the years. Drones are the hot new thing for photographers and gamers but thankfully, R/C heli's are still popular with folks that like a constant challenge. You must be a master mechanic, an electronic wizard, plus have cat-like reflexes and eagle eyes to truly become a skilled, R/C heli pilot.

As for RunRyder, I'm just glad it is still here. Life has it's challenges and thankfully, Mark made it through another one. Hopefully some of his sponsors will come back. Let's keep this forum going!

Fly on my friends!

Looks like my last post was 15 months ago, I still fly some, have a bunch of helis that are basically ready to go. But for me at least it is time to be more of an adult, wife and kiddo now take full priority.

I think that the biggest game-changer for me in the last few years has been FPV. Once you experience it with decent FPV gear it's very addictive imho.

The good news for us heli guys is that most of the skills we've learnt are applicable to FPV quad racing and freestyle.

I get my heli's and 3d planes out for a bit of LOS fun once in a while but for the most part they are kinda collecting a bit of dust, lol!

I'm still so very glad that Mark has kept this site going and I look at it every day. Thanks Mark and cheers.

This site is doing fine and Mark has kept it up for all of us.
The hobby has always changed and it is now. When I was a kid everyone flew control line. I am still here flying. Some people come and go. This is not a hobby that you just do on a whim, it takes a commitment in learning and money.
Less manufactures, FBL, new aircraft (quads) and the FAA crap that made things look bad. It will get better I believe.
The heli's that we have now all fly incredible, the radio's, battery's, servo's and all the accessory's are way ahead of anything in the past. (I still kike flybars)
Don't be depressed jump in and have a ball.
It's better than ever.

When I started flying 35 years ago, my teacher told me that most people that try it, can't handle it, too much at one time and can't process the info and feedback fast enough, lose it and crash. I tried to teach my best friend in Louisiana how to fly a heli. He was real good at flying planes. No matter how much I helped and buddy boxed, told him to sim, he couldn't get it. So the irony of the story is, we heli fliers are a special breed. It's true that people now a adays want instant grats., and it takes time and patience to first tweek these things, check them on a regular basis and the to fly them and it's too much or too time consuming for some. I believe too that our hobby is going down hill. I posted about the price of the ys 60sr price jumped a hundred dollars more one week ago, and it's still on the first page. Ten years ago, after 1 hour, it would be on the second page. I still love this place and visit here 10 times a day. Oh well sey La vie mon.

It's certainly lost its appeal as others have stated. A steep learning curve building, learning how to hover, basic flight, aerobatics. Today it's instant gratification. The other negatives are no visible media, years ago you could find Rc Heli the magazine even in Walmart. By the way there was radio control Heli pilot a few seasons ago which Chris Reibert contributed reviews for which got me back in but that's not longer available. And in my surrounding 3 hobby stores have closed shop the main 1 being rc hobbies & more so support & hold on to what resources in which you have
