And your population is how big in comparison with that of the USA?

And the industrial base?
Granted, that is why I said
So maybe in countries/states where most of the electricity is hydro generated, the carbon footprint of generating electricity would not be the #1 culprit. Probably far from it.
Take my post for what you will, the points to consider, is that even if you maintain a high carbon footprint for generating your electrical requirement, and only concentrated on your #2 (transportation) contributor, I am sure just getting that down just 30% would make a world of difference.

By the same token, making a concerted effort to change more and more of one's electricity generation grid into hydro and other means with low to no carbon footprint, would also make a world of difference.

You may not be aware of it, but China, your big world competitor, is actually now one of the world leaders in alternate "green" energy generation. Just take a trip to some of their newer industrial cities and you will be amazed at what can be done when there is a will to do so.

Is that why they're always seen wearing "gas masks" from the air pollution?.....LOL

BTW.....I heard that HF's "Off Topics" section was eliminated...

At RR, there is such a section....

Using the average annual mileage our leasing industry uses when calculating a lease (15000kmy/9375miy)and usinng the rate of power consumption that Motor Trend calculated on their Tesla S, I calculated the energy . . .
. . . And what was that number from Motor Trend ?

Which I have on a number of occasions.

Our news media shows us mostly Bejing, a very OLD city with a lot of OLD type of industry and most of this was during their Olympics. That is why I said "newer industrial cities".

Asian cultures are more prone then us to wearing such light masks (far cries from a gas mask)in smog, or when they have a cold or even when there is a flu scare.

Of note is that our news services have shown, on a number of occasions, some pretty severe smog in a number of American cities also.

After looking it up, I find electric cars getting average of about 3 miles/KWH

With one gallon of gas having about 35 KWH of energy, that equates to about 105 MPG.

Since 2/3 of the energy in gasoline goes up in waste heat in an internal combustion engine, you're down to 35 MPG . . . still pretty good.

Maybe some regenerative braking going on there ?

Costa Rica

This is an interesting discussion. I am 100% convinced that the way forward is with more renewables. However, the free market has to dictate (within rational regulations) when this is feasable or not.

Take Costa Rica where I live. Small country. 5 million. Third world. 99% of the energy produced is renewable. Mainly hydro, some wind, some geothermal, some sugar cane. This as a headline number is pretty good and has taken headlines all over the world. Great right?

The one crack I find in all this, is that the one controlling the grid is a state owned company that has been known to build hydroelectric plants for 2-10 times the normal cost/MW. So in the end, we as consumers end up paying a far greater price per kwh than we otherwise would if the market was open to competition, and certainly with other sources of energy.

So it's a tricky proposition. Do we invest to lower our carbon footpint even if the cost is astronomical? For me the answer is balance and open markets, and pushing "green" energy agendas to the extreme like if it were a religion is not good for the majority.

We are a nice headline example for the world of what can be done, but rarely does cost (investment in hydros and cost per kwh) come up after the headline...

A story that just keeps repeating. Back room deals between politicians and large companies making big bucks with pay-offs.
