I currently have 4) 700 class birds all using Skookum FBLs. They have flown fine for years. Skookum has no support that I have found.
To make matters worse I fly JR and have fought with XBUS on the Skookums and have had it.

Here is the question.
Would this group dump the Skookums and replace them with IKONs? Or what is a current FBL that will be around and supports X-bus?

These FBLs frustrate the hell out of me and I want to get back to flying. Don't really want to swap to Mikado V-bar. Please post some options.

Help.

What's wrong with Vbar? JR Xbus works great with the full size and mini (pre-neo) which can be found cheap in the classifieds.

I would say the 2 leading the pack for support and inovation are Ikon and Spirit , you can even have Spektrum integration now !

if you want a reliable rescue I would go with Spirit ...
just try one first and go from there

JR DMSS X-bus plays well with Beast-x, and I have had great sucess with Bavarian Demon. Now that the Axon is out and proven, it will be my next FBL.

I am a JR DMSS XG14 Xbus user, and I am using the Full size blue Vbar, Mini Vbar, and Ikon all with no issues. You just have to get the channel mapping correct for everything to workout. Please let me know if you have any questions that I can help with.

Thanks for suggestions

E- thanks but I have too much invested in JR to give up now.
I have 2 large planes,3 foamies, 6 helis and 5 mini-quads on JR systems.
I have played with the V-bar system and have a V-bar Silver line that was checked out after a brutal crash. I still hate that they make you buy FW to open up Nitro functionality. Are they phasing these units out in favor of NEO system? Don't want to go with more tech on the way out. If I go with Mikado I will have to get more Helicopters.

IKON and MSH brain are BIG on the FBL forums, but I haven't directly spoke with anyone using either system.

How easy is the setup?
-Tuning?
-Any idea if I buy a new system, will it be outdated soon by newer models.
-Are there remote options for tuning? IE: IPhone app, Bluetooth, WiFi.

Thanks again for the input.

**I have 2 Nitro(sorry Glow-Fuel)helis and over 30 cases of fuel in storage. Its time to get back to why I started RC.

VC's and NEOs can be used with fixed wing aircraft, too....

And multi-rotored aircraft....

It's pretty versatile.....

The IKon and Brain are both identical minus the brand names and color. They both use the same interface software. The setup is very straight forward once you figure it out and understand the functionality. It has great tuning ability, remote programming via Bluetooth is available either internally or via a plug in module. There is an app for IOS and android both. The rescue feature is standard and requires no upgrades to function. Also the unit will automatically update to the newest version of software when you connect it. It will let you know that there is an update, but you have to accept it to proceed into the computer setup. All of the gains are adjustable along with built in governing. The IKon is also more vibration resistant or forgiving than the Vbar's are. The unit also has internal vibration analysis to determine where you might be having an issue based off rpm . I hope that this helps you out.

Dave's Raptor...thanks.

Have you used them on NITRO? I have 2)700 Nitros and about 30 case of fuel in my shed. Really want to get back into this and fly my N7. I had huge problems with the GOV function with Skookum and V-bar you have to buy extra FW to make it work.

The skookums still work great with Electrics, but don't work well with Xbus.

Will IKON interface with X-bus?
Are yours soft mounted or just on 3M tape?

Thanks for input.

E-Engineer ...you are cheating.
I have helped setup a heli on V-control. It is insanely simple. But no more Transmitters. I loved my Mikado V-bar Silverlines, but are they being phased out??

**I did look at the system, but it would require new helis for my OCD to be at peace.

Yes sir, I have one setup on my NX4 with no issues. The interface is fine between the IKon and XBus, once I got the channel mapping figured out it was just following the instructions on each page with the tabs. Like I mentioned the advanced settings help with gain tuning for your liking. There are baseline settings determined by which heli, servo, blade, battery, motor information you put in on the first page. I am just using one or two layers of the grey 3m tape direct to the mounting location.

Speaking as one who likes helis ( I have 9 600 size and up ) I used my JR9503 and Skookum 720 ( with DSMX SATs ) and reluctantly switched over to Vbar and VBC Tx and don'r regret it at all. It cost me over $2k to switch but selling my SK720s recouped the cost a bit. However, I sold mine just at the tipping point of Skookum bailing out of hobby grade electronics.
Annoying things with Vbar is you have to have the Vbar powered to make changes. ( as in plugged into the battery pack, not a USB ) However, similar to the SK720, I can put ANY parameter on a rotart knob and dial it in while flying. Or have a friend twist it while I fly.
My maiden flight with my very first NEO and first time ever setting up Vbar... the heli flew better than my best tuned Skookum ever did.
Since I'm cheap though too... this VBC and NEOs will last me the next 10 years. I won't update to something new until these are just soooooo ancient that my next change feels as good as going from Skookum to NEO.

I have been flying Skookum 540 on Nitro Helis and they fly great. Have you contacted Alvin Chai on Facebook he can assist in your questions. Alvin is one of the developers for Skookum.

Spoke with Alvin via email 3 years ago. Got the Governor functioning. Even talked with support at Skookum about the horrible ramp up that beats on your clutch/drivetrain. I recently tried to update software, had problems. Tried to convert to Xbus/DMSS and had jitter on 2 channels. Made me nervous and I wouldn't fly the bird. Got frustrated and just shelved my birds.

Really think I need to get rid of unsupported equipment and move on.
JR kinda has me worried, but they replied after a few days and even sold me some receivers for my fixed wing projects. **Still absolutely love their servos.

Thanks for the guidance.

E- will keep the V-control in mind.

Thanks, I watched a setup video on the IKON.
- Do they have good software support?
-Do you think they will be around for awhile with the hobby at a lull for the moment?

NOOO! I can't be the only one left in the dark with flybarred helis!

Good luck on all the updates. To be honest with you, buying electronics is a big guess if they will stay in business. Lot of things are changing, I would focus on Futaba, Beastie, Mikado and Spektrum FBL controllers for the sake of longevity.
