None of my birds have nitro written anywhere on them. Nor do they have the T word or A word.

Maybe I should be blaming Align Corporation (again) for my frustrations.

Glow Bird does have a certain 'je ne sais quoi'!

I think a lot of people are just jealous because they are not smart enough to know how to tune a NITRO engine. That is the reason they are stuck with flying electric.

If an RC boat engine runs on 60% nitro, with about 20% oil and the remaining is methanol. Is the engine running on methanol?

If an RC boat engine runs on 60% nitro, with about 20% oil and the remaining is methanol. Is the engine running on methanol?
I would say no. And that was something of the point I was trying to make.

While people have been running our engines on fuel that is mostly nitromethane for decades, they have been traditionally called "glow engines". Even though it is possible to fuel a glow ignition engine with nitromethane -and then realistically call it a "nitro engine"- it, historically, would still have been called glow engine.

It took the car/truck community to start calling them nitro engines and nitro fuel. Even though most car fuel is similar to helicopter fuel in that it typically contains 20 to 30% nitro and 50% methanol, it took the car people to start calling these nitro engines.

Now it has spread. Sport airplane fuel, the mildest fuel I mix, usually contains 10% nitro, 20% oil and 70% methanol. Even though the fuel has twice as much oil as nitro and contains seven times more methanol than nitro, modelers use the expression "nitro engine" to differentiate them from gas and electric power.

In the boating community, where they do use 60+% nitro, they typically would have called their engine a glow engine and would have said they'd set it up to run high nitro. Now I see people running a helicopter on fuel containing 15% nitromethane and they call it a nitro heli.

To put that into context, the NHRA only allows 90% nitromethane in a top fuel car. The remainder is methanol. Would you ever consider calling a NHRA top fuel car running 90/10 nitro/methanol, a methanol car because it contains 10+% methanol?

Oh well. There are bigger things in the world worry about. If people wanta call 'em nitro engines, go man go.

I have run pipes on helicopters in the past. There is performance there but you got to really want it. The complexity somewhat offsets whatever gain you get. In the end I decided to go back to the quite, smooth running, bolt-and-go muffler. It was an interesting experiment and I may go back to it one day; but, the time it takes to get this right directly comes out of stick time. Helicopters have a high fiddle factor and this adds to it.

Pictures are from 2004.

That double pipe is some crazy stuff. You have really got to be looking for the secret sauce to try some of that.

Thanks for the pictures.

I guess one can look at what is needed in all of our glow/nitro engines, no matter how much or how little nitro they are burning - they all need that glow plug.
