Hay! All of my stuff is now old enough to be considered collectible!

I recall new and resale on helis was pretty good 12 years ago. you could very easily get 60-70% back if your stuff was in good condition and a desirable model. I sold lots of stuff to friends when my hobby room was full and i wanted to try something new. Almost never needed to advertize. Just show up at the field, mention i wanted to sell, and more often than not it would leave the field in someone else's car.

Very few of the old heli gang here fly at all anymore. I don't fly very often either. For maybe 10 years i used to go every saturday and sunday, last year i went maybe 4 times, and i havent been out once this year. I have lots of flyable gear, and money to buy more if i want, but for whatever reason the drive just isnt there.

Is it wage stagnation? maybe, but not as far as what i see in my local group. My salary dropped in half for a couple years, but mostly recovered, largely stagnant. Investing went well, but in spite of that i am not a big buyer or flyer anymore. One of my buddies lost nearly everything, rebuilt his business and gained it all back and is doing very well, but for whatever reason he doesn't fly or buy anymore...

The hobby never quite recovered from the recession. It was an expanding hobby 12 years ago. It has been shrinking and changing for several years. Tucson lost a great shop a couple months ago. Now we are down to one not great shop.

The RC hobby is about due for a rebound i think, but God only knows when or why that will happen.

One more observation: For the past couple years (2015 and 2016) economists were saying manufacturing and a few other segments of the ecconomy were topped out and even receding. They all said the economy was holding together (not in recession) because of stong consumer spending. Unfortunately that strong consumer spending was not going to buying my Synergy or Preditor gasser....

Wage stagnation? yup, its real, but it is not the problem.

Another situation is on the very near horizon....

Robotics.....

Within 5 years, they will take over burger flipping, etc.

And those kind of jobs will be rendered obsolete.

It's easier to pay for that kind of infrastructure, than to pay people that don't give a damn....and that demand wages for a job that they do poorly....along with the health benefits that the idiot politicians demand....

And such idiot politicians and their idiot "fan base" can't even see reality when it stares them right in the face....

Im not really sure what the deal is with RC helis... granted drones did have a marked effect, but I think drones added alot of new flyers, but took a few away from helis and planks, and none of these drone fliers jumped from drones to helis...

At my field, the youngest is in his late 20s, the oldest warms the bench and allows his plane to sun bathe. But we are not adding any new Heli flyers. New gear shows up and its maybe one or two guys whom are not even locals...

For me, it was all about income and the desire to keep trying... there was all sorts of new stuff comming out first with the explosion in 450 class and low price point (E-SKY, Blade, E-flight), FBL, GPS, then the whole Lipo wars with who had the highest C rating... then Telemetry... New blade design, new motors from TRM, Hanson, If you didnt fly scorpion motors your were a weakling, Then the whole coreless/brushless servo speed/torque wars... all of this happened pretty much within a 8 year window. My guess starting around 2005 and tapering off in 2013.

once the "wars" stopped and the magazines stopped promoting it all (and most of the good magazines died off), my desire to be on the bleeding edge died off with it.

Now I fly once a month at best.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...
