Guys, so I am selling a Giant Scale plane on RCU for a friend, I have a guy from Canada that has replied twice about it,,

well, he wants to use PayPal and I have never used it,, can you give me some tips, and tell me how he could go about cheating us,,

it seams to me it would be pretty easy for him to say the box was full of rocks and tell PayPal he wants his money back ???

what you say guys ??

thanks !!!

I am currently fighting with PayPal over a POS from this site that bought a Kontronik ESC from me a couple months ago. If you are the buyer PayPal is a great thing. If you are the seller, then you are hosed. PayPal will protect the buyer at all costs as it is their claim to fame. They make it nearly impossible to fight the claim the buyer filed against you. I have talked to several business owners that use PayPal and they all have horror stories about dealing with PayPal as the seller.

Personally I will never use them or Ebay ever again. YMMV. Once this case is over I will explain in great detail.

You've never used paypal - I am assuming you dont have a paypal account then. You will have to create an account with paypal. That will require you attaching a bank account to the paypal account. It takes a few days for paypal to verify the bank account. You will be charged International fees as the seller (since you are selling from the US to Canada). That fee is 4.4%. So by using Paypal, you are effectively giving the seller a 4.4% discount from the agreed upon selling price.

If you dont already have a Paypal account, and you probably wont use one in the future, I wouldnt got through the trouble.

Being the seller using Paypal, you are generally hosed if something goes bad. Being the seller using Paypal and selling internationally,....your hosing is increased exponentially.

I would never use Paypal to sell anything I cant afford to loose and understand that there is always the possibility of recouping zero dollars on the transaction.

I've used PP to sell 100+ items on RR, eBay & HF.
I've never had a problem with a buyer.

If the buyer sends the money as a "Gift", you do not pay the fee and they have no protection against you scamming them.

If the buyer sends the money for "Goods and Services", then you pay the fees and they get PP protection against you scamming them.

But, you would NEVER scam them - would you?
Think about it from their side.

I guess it comes down to how much communications you have with the buyer.
In my ads, I post a lot of pictures and I try to be brutally honest about the condition of the item for sale.
EG: "Crashed a few times and repaired with new parts"

I get the feeling certain sellers (not you of course) will post glamor shots of the item and say stupid things in the description like "Never Been Crashed" when they really mean "Never Been Totally Destroyed in a Crash".
The buyer will figure out they were lied to quickly after delivery.
And, you can bet they will not be will to "let it go". They are going to complain and dispute the charge (same as you would, I assume).

But, in the end, it isn't "PayPal's Fault".
Effectively, they are not much different from MasterCard, AmEx or Visa.
If I buy something and then dispute the charge, the seller gets hosed.

I almost got hosed once by PayPal as a buyer. I had to escalate the claim to get my money back after they already released the funds to the seller. PayPal ended up eating the transaction.

I love PayPal as a buyer, I hate Paypal as a seller. I would take pictures of the item before, during and after packing. I would insure the package (make buyer pay). I would use a tracking delivery service. Still things can go wrong.

I have never sold out of the country. I refuse to do that. You have to determine your level of acceptance. Not doing anything also has a cost.

so, in the end, the only way to do it and positively not get scammed is to have the buyer send the money as a "gift"

As a buyer, I would never send money to someone selling something on RR or HF as a "Gift".

Be careful.
When I deal with a seller that says they will only accept payment as a "Gift", I assume they are running a scam.
And that's a stain that doesn't fade.

I totally agree with ssmith512.

I would also add it is a good idea to have a separate bank account with very little money in it to use for PayPal.

You don't want any confusion with your normal bank account.

Best of luck.

No thanks.
Not from someone I don't know and will only accept cash.
I might receive a box full of rocks.

Passing because I need another plane like I need a hole in my head.

I don't need a hole in my head, so thanks... good luck, and think twice about accepting cashier's checks. There is just as much fraud with those.

They will send you a large check. You send them the merchandise and the balance. Later you find the check is counterfeit. You loose the sale item and cash.

If someone offers to buy with cashier's check, take the check and send them a box of S**T. Tell them the balance of their check is in the box. Don't even try to deposit the check, you will incur fees for returned check.
