Like title says;

I'm building a Trex 700L and trying an Ikon2 for the first time. In fact all I've ever used is Beastx plus/7200bx before and wanted to try something different.

Should I use and RX with a Sat or should I use 2-sat's no rx?
What's the pros/cons?

I know beastx plus only wants you to use an rx on larger helis.

Thanks

Haven't tried an Ikon....have been using a VStabi MiniV-Pro FBL controller....no fullsize RX.

Using 2 Spektrum satellite RXs....either DSM2 or DSMX(don't mix DSM2 with DSMX sats...either one type or the other).

Haven't had any problems....works great.

The only "quirk" is to first "bind" one sat. to your TX....then disconnect it....and then "bind" the 2nd sat.....then connect them both and they're both "bound"(the sat. LEDs both "on" solid)....

The "quirk" described is with my MiniV....don't know about the Ikon...

No issues with using only two Sats. One on each side of the frame. A lot less wiring on your heli by not using a receiver and the cables

I was nervous because Beastx says not to just use 2sats.

I'm not sure if there is a difference in the quality of signal from an rx to sat. I appreciate your feedback.

I have an rx sitting around but I have to order a sat or two anyhow so figured I'd see what everyone else was doing.

Thanks

I run futaba so i use the sbus in my goblin. My buddy has a matching goblin and uses two sats one on each side. No issues at all. Once you fly I'm in, you will never want anything else. Its just easy and flys wonderful

I think you're confusing the fact that BeastX plus only supports a single sat. The reason they say to use a full rx is because a single sat for spektrum is only rated for park flier...450 and smaller only. If you put a single sat on a larger heli, they tend to fly farther away and you'd have range issues.

It's for that reason that Beastx makes their recommendation.

However, Ikon, Vbar and others have support for multiple sats. So, you get full-range coverage. No issues whatsoever. I ran two spektrum sats on 700-class helis for years with no issues.

if it ain't broke, break it.

Ikon2 DSMX sat bind

Ok, so I'm trying to bind with using the 2 DSMX Sat's only.

I've tried to bind both at once, one at a time. I cannot get them to bind.

Per Ikon instructions and it won't work.

What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a link to the manual?

Assuming you have check the sat. cabling....

Can you bind the sats. to another RX/FBL....just to check them?

I know this doesn't help...but with the MiniV quirk I described...using the VBAR setup menu.....

After pressing the "bind" button on the software, you must remove/add power to the MiniV(for < 1 sec.) to get the sat's bind LED to blink(rapidly for binding).

Then, while pressing the bind button on the TX back(JR12X in my case), turn on the TX.....and then then sat. bind leds lock on solid....

At first, this procedure through me for a loop. Also, I had to have servos hooked up for whatever the reason is.

It's always a learning experience, isn't it?.....

Ok; so I got it all to bind. I have no idea how or why but it's bound.
I bound the sats to another rx first then the ikon and it worked.

Now I'm trying to learn the setup on this thing.

I'm trying to figure out the flying style in gov switchE (DX9) according to a video I found on YouTube.

Also getting my CC Edge 160hv working.

I'm on a recharge batteries eat dinner break....lol

Hey EE..Just curious about your binding technique

With the mini v-bar..I've always bound with both sat's plugged in..and haven't had any problems..what's the benefit?

I do a great decending funnel!

I don't really know....

I bound with both RXs plugged in....and then I noticed one sat's led wasn't on....

So I unplugged the bound one....and bound the other...then both were bound....and then the leds were on solid.

So I just do it this way.....

I wish I could do it like you mention....

Weird....

Spektrum Satellites are FULL RANGE receivers.

...and not park flyer as thought, so no range issues.

Just make sure to have a satellite antenna perpendicular to the other satellite. (90 degrees)

Check my 550 in gallery for how I placed them. Notice how antennas go beyond the edge of the carbon frames as well.

Binding DSMX is range-dependent
If the TX is too close to the sats, they will not bind.

I use at least an arms-length between the TX & the sats for binding.
This is a "Spektrum Thing" and not related to any gyro company or model.

I've used 2 DSMX sats on my gyros since I changed to FBL (starting with a 3GX, Skookum and now MSH (Brain)) on helicopters from Goblin 380 / Trex 450 up to Raptor 90 SE/SD and Trex 700N.
They work fine.

Lately, I have changed to SRXL and use the AR8010T on my T700N.
The AR8010T has 3 sats + 1 internal RX and uses 1 SRXL cable to the Brain 2.
All the servos connect to the Brain 2 (like normal) and the SRXL port on the gyro is on "CH3"

I use the SPM4649T on my G380 for bi-directional telemetry from the ESC / Gyro back to my DX9.

Using SRXL will decode all the channels that the transmitter sends (like a DX18 or DX9) and the Brain 2 allows you to use the "extra" channels for up to 3 in-flight adjustments (like gains or RPM).

I've never noticed a DSM2/DSMX binding issue with regards to being close....using a MiniV

Guess I've been lucky....
