If i put the tail rotor to the left do i need to reverse the main rotor so it will spin counterclockwise?

Not if you don't want to. I have a few scale birds with the tail rotor on the left side with the main rotor rotating clockwise. Depending on your method of tail drive transmission (wire drive, torque tube or belt), you may be able to change the direction of the tail rotor rotation. Don't get hung up on it if you can't though. I have 2 AH-6 Little Birds where the tail rotor is on the left side, yet rotates CCW. They fly just fine like that.

co_rotorhead:

If you have the tail rotating CCW on your AH-6's, that is scale. The tail blades of the Hughes series helicopters rotate away from the mains, not into the mains. Take care.

it does not matter which way the tail rotates

From a mechanical point, it doesn't really make any difference but if you are making a "Scale" helicopter, direction of rotation does matter. It costs precious points in a competition if you don't have it right. Take care.

Simple solution

change the output gear to the opposite side of the input gear, this will change direction of rotation, (that is if you have room in your gearbox)
With the Vario gearbox it is easy

Flipped tail rotor

You should have no problems flipping it. Here's my Raptor 50 with the tail rotor flipped on a MD500 fuselage
