First of all that's not a model helicopter he's flying. It may not be a commercial product but it's not a model heli. Secondly the Police officer clearly made up rules on the fly. Thirdly, the quad flyer is not flying in a controlled airspace as in a duly designated model flying area.

I see lots of potential issues with this. The cops are pulling regs out of their backsides and enforcing something that doesnt exist but the flier isnt doing himself or the hobby any favors by putting himself in a no won scenario. Once the officer invoked "public safety" he has the upper hand, regs or not. This is a situation that could have been avoided.

It may be old but it's still a problem. Cops DO NOT get to enforce "policy" without being backed up by published laws.

Notice the video at 3:06 the cop asking if he paid to get in the park and the answer was "I have a pass". State issued passes are not valid at Kensington Metro Park.

http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,...78472--,00.html

Maybe it was a "Metro Park" pass. (the cop was fishing for a violation)

Yes, and there's some places where one can't urinate...

Ozzie Osborne once tried to urinate on the Alamo...

They just about strung him up by his heels and flogged him like a piñata....

It's interesting that he was able to politely debate with the officers like that.

I know a person who wasn't so lucky when he asked for the same kind of information at a public park about a year ago. He was threatened with arrest within 2 minutes into the encounter and they were not polite or respectful. They stated they do not need to explain themselves, only that they made a lawful request as police officers and he needed to comply or face charges.

They told him if he did not cease and desist, they would charge him with public endangerment and I'm sure they could tag on resisting arrest with little effort... amongst other things. He left out of fear of further escalation i.e. public execution for flying his drone in a public space.

And that's how cops get a bad name and reputation.

If policing was more universally consistent and based less on an officer's mood or bias, maybe it would be much easier and safer for the general public and law enforcement as well. But it's human nature I suppose.

There are some people that are just not suitable for police work. People that are short sighted, arrogant ,have a touch of megalomania and little patience do not belong in that job. And when they screw up, they cover up for each other and the department. - - - not a good situation.

It may be human nature but that does not mean we have to hire that kind for the job.

It all has to do with the camera trained on the officer. I am sure it would be a different discussion if the officer knew he was not being filmed or recorded.

Amazing how this works.

Like I said, if an "officer" exhibits different behavior when he is being watched than when he thinks he is not, then his attitude and morals come into question - - - and he is unsuitable for the job.

Neither one of you are wrong on that respect.

Sad but true. Reminds of that officer a few years back that shot a man in the back in SC and then proceeded to place a weapon on his person to cover it up. He had no idea he was being recorded. Before the recording came out, everyone assumed the officer was being truthful.

Arrogant cops

I'm glad we don't have that problem yet in Ottawa but Toronto has had it's share of shady police. Guess it depends on where you live?!

Here's another example of police more interested in asserting their incompetent authority rather than solving the problem.
