My dog actually tore the moccasin in half, but the snake got at lest two strikes in his upper jowl.
Took him to my vet and they used antivenom plus he was on IV for 3 days very near death. His head swelled up twice it's normal size.
I live in mid Florida and a long dry spell had moccasins moving to find new water.
He is pretty much recovered now, but my grandson made some high powered snake shot for my 38 revolver. (He does reloading) I first was going too get a 410, but he convinced me a pistol is better since I can carry it when mowing or other yard work.
Funny thing is, the dog only is allowed out in a fenced area, but the damn snakes just don't respect a fence.
I'll post a picture later

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?

very lucky indeed... dogs around here normally dont survive long enough to make it to a vets office when bitten by the rattlers we got around here... the worst are when they tangle with a baby rattler..which always bite with full venom injection. which is not always the case as with an adult rattler that will sometimes inject little to no venom as a defensive tactic (Dry bites)

could have been worse overall considering your in Florida... dogs, cats, chickens and other living lawn decor especially small and midsize ones often disappear thanks to the large exotic snakes and the alligators.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

My vet actually called his friend in Texas who had experience with dogs-snake bites. That call to a vet in Texas probably is what saved my dogs life.
.
Here is my dog after three weeks, but he has healed even more now.

You should look into a Taurus Judge.......410/45LC revolver....5 shots....could take care of several problems at once

castlebravo,
Excellent idea. Just to expensive for a snake gun. But what a powerful deterrent for defense.
Since I have a couple of 38 specials, and I see they sell shot shells for them. I'll probably order a box if I can find anybody that has them in stock. Other wise my grandson will have to make a few more for me.

Snake shot is a popular ammunition for hikers in Colorado. They make the shells in many different calibers.

You don't need the biggest gun, just an effective one.

Gyro, good looking dog !!, I'm happy you got him fixed up, I hate to see things happen to pets,

I have only seen 2 over my years but we have Rattlers here in Vermont too,
late last year we went for a drive around the lake and I saw something on the road, I didn't pay much attention to it, but as we got by it, it hit me that it was a big ole Rattler coiled up, as I said it was late in the year, and the road was warm and he was getting the warmth from the road,

the first time I saw one was years ago, we were at another lake and he was crossing the road, he was longer than the car was wide, he was a biggy, this lake has a lot of Slate on the side I saw this one,

Lots of harmless snakes here in central Florida, black racers, hog snakes, corn snakes, but here are a couple of pit vipers I have killed. I live out in the country with several small ponds nearby. Gators, black bears and non venomous snakes I leave alone, but pit vipers are a no-no since I have grandkids around a lot.
That rattler I am holding was over 6 feet in length.

I used to use a 16g 5 shot pump shotgun when I went out in the woods.
Pass Christian, Mississippi.

We used to walk the canals and look for cotton mouths
I can't imagine using a pistol for snakes.

Besides, if you ain't looking for them, you don't see them until its too late
