The fifth cell of my pulse battery had higher ir when I got it a couple years ago, I was the third owner.

This year the ir on that cell climbed suddenly,
And as it could relate to my emf boosting experiments I decided to dissect it.

Some conclusions I've drawn

Let me know if I'm wrong
Somebody will

The electrolyte in lipos is a liquid,
But there is not much of it, the layers were only wet enough to notice that something was evaporating.

This cell's COD seemed to have been a side impact early in its life. The dent brought layer edges closer by changing the angle (like air conditioner fins) and damaging the plastic. The metal was exposed and silvery on this spot, whereas scraping revealed it to be copper. My guess is that over time it reacted more and more on that spot, taking more of that cell out of commission.

Interesting. Did you get any pics of the dent/damage?

Not sure that might be it on the side pic there can't zoom with my phone.

As for fire,
It was explained that puncturing the cell doesn't cause the fire.
Metal making the layers short as you pierce them is.

Though I learned of this long ago,
I had no reason to want to open one till now.

I did it out doors and super careful,
Because as certain as I was...
I was nervous still.

Started at the seam with an xacto small angled cut partially through the flap,
Then finished with plastic silverware.

Ultimately disposed of it in saltwater.

That's what they look like.

When the element lithium(which is a metal) is exposed to air(oxygen), a violent chemical reaction occurs.

Used to demonstrate that in chemistry class....sodium does it too, but not as reactive.

Be careful, though

The lack of reaction here could be due to the cell being nearly dead.

But as I understand it lithium polymer batteries don't have true lithium metal.

So who knows?

I do have a "good" cell that I ruined the tabs on, I may take a "stab" at it

Take a fully charged "good" pack and shoot it with a .22....

And watch it "fire up" when exposed to the atmosphere.....
