Hey T.

I'm not suggesting what I post is mine. Of course Mark can and may delete whatever he chooses.

What I'm suggesting is that what we post may not exclusively be the resalable property of RR Inc. Am I not free to take your posts and re-post them elsewhere? I am not an officer of RR and yet I take information you may have posted here and reuse it without copyright permission.

While the web forum RunRyder clearly owns copyrighted intellectual property, are the actual posts part of that? Are the last 15 years of posts copyrighted material owned by RR?

Ask Mark about that. They are certainly not part of the public domain because once he shuts the server down no one can access them. The photos, movies, posts, galleries and anything else that was a part of this site goes. There may be mirrors of threads floating around for a while but those will be out there as long as their servers decide to keep them. I would imagine with the cost of hosting a site this big and the bills that go along with it, not to mention the size of this one site that it will be archived and shut down as Mark said.

You can copy and repost anything you like off the net, folks do it all the time on FB and other sites. There's no stopping that. As far as whether or not the copyright extends to actual posts or not is something that a lawyer will have to answer. I know that once the site shuts down how will you retrieve the posts or anything else that was here?

It would be nice if everyone would stop publicly speculating on the facts. It's really surprising how few people have acknowledged his choice of words. Mark is an intelligent guy that doesn't speak haphazardly. The choice to use the word "inheriting" is more ominous than anything. I'd like to think more members would reach out and offer a listening ear, or continued friendship privately than assume as they see fit in a public forum. I hope Mark is with supportive people and taking care of himself in what is clearly a troubled time, whatever the reasons are.

When you use the word assume, exactly who are you referring to?

This site should have gone to a full subscription service a long time ago. Divorce is a messy biz and it can be costly.

If you're an Amateur Radio Op and you want to enjoy the full benefits of a site like QRZed or eHam you pay the subscription service, if not you get the basic package and that's it. Same goes with ARRL membership. If you're a Ham you pay the dues and enjoy the benefits of the organization like an ARRL email address and professional lobbyists to the FCC to keep the hobby safe from being stolen out from under us. RunRyder is a great resource for us and Mark has done a helluva job keeping it going but it's T Minus two months and counting and with all that a Divorce can do to a person I don't blame Mark for shutting it down but it was a hobby that turned into a business for him and it's a hobby to us.

Whatever happens I'm grateful for our time here but if there's one constant in the Universe; it's change. That's not stopping. If Mark wants to keep it going and charge a subscription I stand ready with my finger on the PP money trigger, if not I respect what he's doing and wish him well. Good luck with whatever decision you make Mark.

I gotta go with T-Moore on this one. I think I said: "I refuse to speculate as to exactly why Mark has chosen to close RR..."

--------------------

T-Moore and others that might be following this thread:
I must have been imprecise in with the wording of my post. You might have misunderstood what I said. That is, i.e. I was somehow claiming an ownership of my writings. As a member here since the very beginning I'm well aware of Mark's policies.

What I am asking is, that if Mark chose to, could he make the posts and knowledge of the last 15 years available on another site? Could he do so without having to reimburse his estate? What I am exploring is, is there a path going forward if Mark chooses to do so?

I wasn't asking about my personal information. My goal was to explore a way to help future generations of models learn from what has been posted here.

I apologize for any confusion.

Cheers,
Bill

2,000 and counting

With this post I reach 2,000 post elite status... wish I had something bright, generous, or deeply meaningful to say.

I think something better is to say what a wonderful 6 years it has been here. Sorry to piss some (or most) of you off. I just write what I feel.

To Mark Ryder, thank you for the place to visit and waste my time. Your efforts and guidance have made this a great place on the net.

There's a lot of history here and a lot of knowledge put down in over 15 years. We all knew this day could come. It's Mark's business. He has to do what makes sense for him and not us. It's a lot of work to do something like this. There is no other Forum like RR, no template or software that works like this site does. Every other site is a kludge of something else, this one was built from scratch and it shows. The reason is because this site was coded in HTML by Mark, it's all his.

We all like the way it works and we're used to it but when you are up against free sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat that derive their revenue by traffic and are much broader in appeal than a specific site like this, the only recourse is for the ad revenue to pay the bills or subscription services do it. There's no other way, just two. Manufacturers have found that they can have free pages on FB and they don't have to advertise on Heli specific sites which makes it tough on top of a decline in traffic since the hobby and hence the industry is shrinking.

I'm reminded of some advice an old co worker shared with me some time ago; he said, "life's tough and it's a vicious game". We don't always win in life, sometimes just being able to stand is enough.

I would like to send some Funds your way Mark, and I think others on here should also for the years of access to this great platform. If we have to send it to another member that lives close to you so "you know who" does not get a taste.
Learning, buying and selling and just shooting the breeze with other like minded heli fanatics. This site is the best.
I have not flown in two years due to family (young child) and work reasons. But I still check in here on RR to see what's going on.
Mark has spent a good amount of $$$ on the site from equipment to Traveling to shoot video and chronicle the major events. I have seen him at IRCHA with the towel over his head shooting video in the hot sun.
Thanks for your hard work and happiness you have brought to our community.
