My 5 year old got a Dodge Charger power wheels a couple years back. The first thing I told my wife, was that when the battery goes bad I was going to put in a lipo.

It sat in the garage this last winter and The battery wouldn't charge. I jumped it up to 11v and the charger recognized and started charging it. But it's not gonna have the same juice as before so I figure I'll still work out some lipos for it.

I've put old lipos in my drills, kids toys, a beard trimmer (lasted 4 years before the lipo pooped). I've had no issues. Though the toys I've put them in do not get used unsupervised.

I'm thinking it'll work just fine. A lot of people say lipos are for brushless, and that has always sounded stupid. That being said my 14.4 drill did not like a 4 cell lipo, but I have been using the same two 3 cell lipos in there for 7 years.

So I'm posting here to see if I can get anyone to donate some old lipos to the cause. I will pay shipping.

I've found a couple candidates if I end up buying new ones. One of those will cost about 50 shipped. So it's not that I need used battery because I can't buy new, it's that I would like to recycle and it's a bit more of a project if I'm cobbling together used ones.

"Used lipos under your kids butt?"

Yeah I know,
But again, I'm not stupid, that's what fire walls are for.

So if you want pm me. Looking for 2 cell or 3 cell lipos, but I've taken cells apart and made new batteries, so if you have something that has a couple good cells. Hoping for cells around 2ah or higher.

I have a feeling that maybe shipping on several used lipos may cost more than just buying a new one.

But it can't hurt to ask.

I run a couple of these in my kids' Power Wheels.

Only problem is that they don't know when to stop and the packs tend to get ruined from over-discharge. A low voltage alarm would be a good idea.

Darren

I have a lipo monitor to install in it.
I quit using it on my helis and just went to using the timer.

14.8 that's not too much voltage?

Nope, 4S seems to be perfect. It provides a nice boost over the stock 12v battery without getting too crazy or burning anything up.

With the safety and fire concerns over LiPos in devices such as this and especially during charging.... I'd strongly consider going A123, Poly LiFe or LiIon cylinder cells such as those produced by Samsung for the tool industry. All are widely available and A123 (though the most expensive) is very tolerant to deep discharge, very unlike LiPo.

Going with any of the above batteries will give you peace of mind both when they are being used and when the toy is being stored in your garage or wherever when not in use. The only down side I can think of is a bit less voltage and more cost. But safety would be a concern if it were my kids and in my house.

Any of these options will offer much better performance than the original lead acid batteries.

My main reason I want to replace the lead acid battery is for charging convenience.

It would be grand for him to say he wants to use it, and I could charge it in under an hour instead of having to plan for him to use it, and charge over night.

Any of the batteries I listed charge in an hour or less.

Given the large size of the Lead acid batteries, you could probably double the run time with any Lixx battery.

Truck.
Thanks for the ideas I may have a source for 18650 cells (cylinder li-ion)

Don't overlook the larger 26650 Samsung cells and remember, these operate and charge at LiPo voltages.

Ok I've got some 5 cell lipos.

I've seen more than that in a power wheels.
But I'm thinking with mine the "brain" has a sound system that would likely be fried by too much voltage.

I'll post some pictures in a bit.

But it looks like using a 3s to power the "brain" and the 5s to power the motors should by possible simply using the relays already in the machine.
