What is trump doing? Coal mining will never be what it was. This is just a photo op trying to look good. China is gearing up to be the leader in renewable energy. This is where the market is heading. China is building wind turbines which a re being sold worldwide. We should be leading this not going backwards toward coal!

part of the problem is that we are way way behind... 33% of power generation plants still actively use coal. and you cant build any "new" plant without the EPA all up in you business about a snail, bird, spider, tribe, fish or even "visual" polution... people are already complaining about wind generators noise, shadow flashing and the occasional bird being turned into a home run by a turbine blade... even solar plants are setting birds on fire mid flight. not to mention the enormous acreage required for such facilities compared to nuclear or fossil fuel which provide so much more power per given area...

dont forget that China is also one of the worlds worst pollutors:
https://www.theguardian.com/cities/...pollution-china
http://www.cnbc.com/2017/01/19/chin...groups-say.html
https://www.usnews.com/news/news/ar...ollution-alerts

biggest problem is the shear amount of power needed vs what one wind generator can produce...

the average offshore wind generator produces apprx 6million KWH per year...
yet the MGM Grand in Las Vegas alone consumes apprx 400,000 MegaWatts per year...

the math is frightening...

Add to what RM3 said. There is no infrastructure to store solar and wind generated electricity. Estimate is trillions of dollars for infrastructure. Plus around $15,000 per household for storage batteries.

Solar and wind generated electricity is OK when the sun is out, and the wind is blowing.

Wind generated electricity accounts for only 8%. Need a coal fired power plant near the wind farms for the other 92% of needed electricity.

So what is Trump doing? What a common sense person would do.

Yea but think of the millions of jobs created building the infrastructure for the new energy would create, not the few thousand coal will

Regardless of what trump and most republicans think, renewable energy is the future. Hopefully we'll hang on for 4 years till someone with a little more common sense gets in white house

I dont think youre seeing the issue.... its a which came first the chicken or the egg issue...

in order to create a job you first have to have the money to offer the job to begin with. In the case of infrastructure where does that come from... BINGO! its called taxes... and currently we do not have a balanced budget, therefore the money is borrowed from future budgets... which puts us ever deeper into debt. OR you can borrow it and pay even more for the item in the future as interest is charged on money borrowed. It gets to the point that the value of the project is less than the money used... hence a negative return on investment.

bottom line is you gotta have the money BEFORE you can create the job.

remember all those "Shovel ready" infrastructure projects? what happened to them?... they didnt exist, yet the money was spent on them anyway and is now lost forever.
renewable energy is the future
this is very true... but how far into the future do we have to go before it becomes viable and self sustaining? thats the question.

I agree.

Please post pics of your rooftop solar panels that supply at least 80% of the total energy requirements of your house.

well if we all walked or rode a bicycle to work, got rid of the Airconditioning, everything electronic and used animals for heavy transport of materials...

guess we could get by with a few hundred wind turbines per state...

We could all do better in reducing our power footprint. Solar will never replace fossil fuel. Wind will never be a stable dependable source of energy.

If you build either, you will have to build fossil backup plants. That doubles or triples the cost. Start turning out your lights when not using them. That is the cheapest and best near term solution.

This is not a democrat vs republican thing, so learn a bit about energy.

well I replaced ALL my lights in my home with LED... that alone cut my bill over 25%

Id ride a motorcycle to work BUT i dont trust texting distracted drivers in bigger vehicles to mind the road.

But as far as the AC goes... id prefer not to sweat and smell bad.

honestly if more of us could work from home, especially those in web technology, software and other tech engineering... that alone could drop fuel consumption in the US.... BUT NOOOOO.... I gotta drive 1 hour to work to sit at a desk that hooks up to the internet OVER THERE to do my job (really stupid) rather than do the same $hit at home.

the people that come to my door and ring my doorbell try to get me to put solar panels on my roof, they tell me that it will lower my bill by $30 to $40 a month, and the company will make the same,, I think yeeaa, this rich company is going to put all that money on my roof and only get a return of $30 or $40 a month,,, <sure

and what about the kick back they get from Uncle Sam,, I want half of that too,
and lets not forget the houses that were burned down because of those things

kind of like the "Smart Meter", burning down houses,, when they removed the smart meter on my house it was all black on one side, I was lucky, and then my bill went down $50 as an average

if my bill was $50 more with that meter, it's not very smart meter

What's wrong with all of the above??? Which is what we're doing now. Alternative energy will happen when it becomes more financially viable. Until then, stay the course. And this has to come from the private sector.
No more Solyndra's thank you.
And ssmitty's right, please, share the pics of your solar panels, windmill and the bike you ride to work every day. Until then, all we hear is bla bla bla.

overall the biggest problem is our relationship to the automobile...

yes even the electric TESLA which BTW is 67% fueled by fossil fuel it STILL plugs into a wall outlet that is supplied by a power station fed by 67% fossil fuel burning power plants... Unless you plugged it into your home Solar panel which you likely got a government subsidy for, and the energy required to build those panels/batteries/inverter, and the cost to replace the components when they break down (and they will)

So honestly the Automobile is the easiest problem to tackle...

look around you when you're out and about, especially during communing times... big ol luxury cars and SUVs, 90% of them with ONE passenger. since when did we need 4,000 lbs of mechanical crap, burning gasoline to generate an average of 200hp (of which we use less than 85hp 95% of the time) to get from one place to another for the purpose of doing something 50% can do from home?

If you really think about it its all quite stupid and extremely wastefull. If all these people would ride an economical scooter or motorcycle that gets 75mpg (my sport bike gets 50mpgs) not only would the traffic volume be reduced, so would the consumption of fuel...

but taking this right of people away will be harder than getting your kids off the smart phone.

look at the volume of people on this intersection... and compare that to anywhere in the USA... this volume would result in absolute grid lock here in the states...

I will post my monthly electric bill where I pay a higher rate for using wind power renewable electricity. There, that is my stupid electric solar panel, and reasonable wind power statement.

My mother and father have several huge wind generators on their farm land. Our family is doing something.

Electric solar panels are quite honestly the worst thing you can do. Solar to heat generation and steam driven generators are ok in my book.

I actually worked on a DOE solar research grant, where I learned my opinions of the technology.

its going to be a long time before we get away from fossil fuels be it coal, oil or gas... just look at all the plastics and other products we derive from petroleum alone.

a few people here and there using 'renewable' energy wont solve anything...

and honestly the term "re-newable" is a buncha bull if you know anything about physics... you dont "re-new" anything. you just take what was there, release it and tap some fraction of it off to get work from it. you cant return the energy you used "back" to the level it was before without consuming more energy to do that to begin with... its violates pretty much all of The second law of thermodynamics which states that the total entropy of an isolated system can only increase over time... thereby no such thing as renewable.

Natural gas is really cheap and burns a lot cleaner than coal.

I work building power houses (piping) and the natural gas to steam plants have been the way to go for quite a long time. I have worked on coal plants too and the cost of maintenance and the short times between shutdowns are really costly.

I made a mistake once, but I was wrong?

well when your supplying nearly 66% of power in the US... yeah costly takes on a whole new meaning...

Many people dont realize the shear amount of power, toxic waste generated and toll on the environment green energy technology has during its creation... its only "clean" after its in use.

Looking at China and the end result of going green by being the world leader in producing green products has nearly destroyed the environment... such much so that its neighbors are complaining.

our carbon foot print per individual is horrific...

we were better off 200 years ago environmentally speaking... the only reason we live longer are medical advancements... which really is a way of eliminating mother natures way of making us individually genetically stronger.

every advancement in technology has its price... to many of those cheering for green energy should spend more time seeing that first.
