Ah, the secret weapon. Ok, I'll let you into the secret Barry, but don't tell anyone else ok?

I have a 2 rpm motor. It has a long shaft, several bearings in line and a plate screwed onto the end. The plate just fitted very nicely into this fuselage and as the fuselage was nice and light, it turned really smoothly.

Lay on the clear and don't worry about runs. You can easily check the finish as it goes around as you always can get the light just right. Not perfect? Lay on some more after a minute or two.

Look back at the previous page and you will see, just under the picture of the full size, the model in silver on the spit, rotating nicely,

The turbine fans actually go round if you blow on them. I had the idea of putting a cooling fan for the ESC behind them so when I turned the model on the turbines would appear to start up. Another job for the future.

Meanwhile, the winch is finally done and mounted. Too much work!

Ah, but if I painted it, it wouldn't be your model, it would be ours! You have done such a great job on it so far, you have to finish it, I couldn't possible take that honor away from you

Thanks Peter!

Question, are there any tricks to keeping the paint line between colors so crisp - especially where the paint line goes right over a rivet or other raised detail? I see zero color bleed between the blue an silver where it goes over the rivets and raised details. How do you do that?

It's not easy to do that Steve. In fact getting around all the fine details that are built into the fuselage made masking take 2 days.

The only thing I can tell you is to stay loose, with the tape I mean When I went around the curve from the fuse to the tail boom, even though I left it really loose, it lifted. So, before I painted, I cut the tape where it had lifted and put another piece on top. If i had stretched the tape, the new piece would have been fractionally larger and the edges would have shown.

Even after taking all this care, there were areas where the paint had bled under the tape, and a super fine touch up brush with paint at exactly the right consistency cured most of the boo boos. You need to have the paint thick enough to cover the offending color with one coat, but thin enough to flow without leaving brush marks. The silver was a real pain as it was metallic. Black and white will be easier.

I have tried painting a second coat of the first color over the masking so if any paint is going to bleed through, it will be the same as whats under it. That will work on solid colors. The problem on this heli is that the details are so fine, too much paint will start to obscure them and in some cases the rivets have disappeared anyway. The blue was very high solid paint and needed a lot of reducer and even at 1:3 it was too thick, but you don't find that out until its too late.

Don't fret it Steve, you will do it, just take your time and make sure your model is dust free and grease free before you even start.

Thanks so much for the pointers. Trying to absorb as much painting info as I can before the "Big Day".

Masking will hopefully be a little easier on my big bird than on your smaller masterpiece. Pretty simple lines, nice and straight in most areas, and I actually did try to strategically place rivets as best I could where I knew they would be close to the mask line to prevent having to tape over them.

I'll still fret over it though, it's in my nature!
