I have a Trex 700e DFC running a 850mx (490kv) 13t pinion/110 main gear with a Castle Creations 160 Edge HV . Last year I had the exact same problem with a 160 Edge and ended up using the trade in program for a replacement . The first 160 esc lasted a good amount of flights in the hundreds . Then one day I would spool up and when I try to punch out the esc would go into a cutoff and I will have to land . This happened every time . I contacted castle and sent the esc in they sent it back said it was fixed and the same thing happened . When I contacted them I was told something was slipping . The pinion , one way , motor shaft... I knew nothing was slipping and can here the motor cutoff also . So for testing purpose I switched to a Castle 120 and the heli didn't cutoff it worked fine . I then paid for the trade in program and bought another 160 edge a year ago . I haven't got to fly much this past year maybe 25 flights on the heli . This past weekend my second to last flight I will spool up switch into idle up on the ground and punch out hard the heli went into a cutoff then flew the rest of the flight , my last flight did the exact same thing and it would cutoff everytime I try to punch out now . I came home took the 120 edge out my 550 and tested my 700 it had no problems and flew fine . I again am dealing with Castle Creations and getting told they think the heli is slipping again . I am going to follow the program and send it in but would like to know if anyone has had a problem like this before or if I should switch to a new brand esc ? Any help would be great because if I have to do this once a year it would be a pain !

Thread I posted when this first happened !

Here are my Castle 160 Edge settings for my Trex 700 and a graph of the last flight where it would cutoff.

Here is the 120 test graph and a normal 700 flight graph from a previous flight when it works !

If you look at your second photo on top row from left, that says you have your amp cutoff set at 60 amps, which will give a cutoff on just about anything other than a hover. Set that 60a to insensitive and if it still happens, then my bet is on the one way bearing slipping.

I have had this exact thing happen and it was the one way slipping. Mine did it on a 160 and 800MX combo on my 700 DFC. I installed the KDE one way hub and no issues on that heli since.

Check your Castle link setup values for your 120. I'd bet that current limit is somewhere around 120a. With the kind of headspeed you are running and doing hard PPs on an 850 motor, I'm pretty sure you can be drawing 150-170 amps on your pitch pumps.

I would turn up the current limiting. Go to the one right below disabled and see what happens. I think that will help. 60 amps on a 700 is not near enough. Insensitive at I think 260 amps is more like it on a 700. Are you sure that is a 160 edge? I have never seen amp setting that low on a 160

Current

Not sure why but I took a screen shot in demo mode for my 700 settings and it came out wrong. I just hooked my Castle 160 up and and the setting I use is insensitive 280a. I have updated the picture!

You have RPM readings well over set rpm. This may be why you are being told something is slipping.

Have you tested without Set Rpm or governor?

700 esc

I have always just ran these same settings, I sent the esc in this morning. Are you saying to try fixed endpoints with throttle curves?

Yes. Just another means of troubleshooting.

Ok, I may even just try and learn the vbar gov and forget the castle gov.

It seems to me that you are running higher than average headspeeds. What is the pinion and main gear combo on your heli. My 700 wouldn't let me run anything but stock 112 gears and a 12 pinion because I did not have an adjustable motor mount set up, and the most I could get was between 2000 and 2150, without getting the warning cautions.

That is why on your logs you got that one peak about 2439 something. 2200 is a good all around number for idle up

Are you running a HV Edge. I see on the logs that you have a line scale for BEC volts. I don't think I've ever seen that on mine.

700 esc

Yes I run a HV edge and I noticed that too which is weird because I run a 2s rx pack straight to my vbar.

700 esc

This was the reply I got when I brought up the fact the rpms hit 2800 on normal flights.

"The motor will over shoot when it loaded and then unloaded quick… the graph I sent you with the notes on the graph also has a time scale at the bottom… so it shows the motor is under a load then unloaded for an extended period… the over shoot goes up the RPM settles back down to the GOV RPM and the current which is the load never comes back… the load is created by the drive sending power to the Head. If the drive is slipping there is no power to the head and the motor just spins unloaded until the drive locks up again and the power returns to the head then the load or current goes up again".

So I guess I just wait to see what they come up with once they recieve the esc.
