GM Plans at Least $1 Billion in Fresh U.S. Investment

General Motors Co. this week will announce plans to invest at least $1 billion across several U.S. factories, two people familiar with the plan said, a move aimed at underlining its commitment to U.S. manufacturing jobs in the wake of President-elect Donald Trump’s criticism of the auto maker’s imports from Mexico.

The move comes days after Mr. Trump publicly ratcheted up pressure on the nation’s largest auto maker. During his press conference last week, the president-elect thanked Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles for recently announced U.S. investment plans that are expected to create a combined 2,700 jobs. He then turned up the heat on GM to follow suit.

If Trump doesn't slow down, we're gonna run out of workers and then we've have to import people form Mexi...uh-oh.

Geez...there's just no pleasing you.

As my father-in-law would say: " I bet you'd complain if they hung you with a new rope."

I hear you.

Here's my GM horror story:

My sister bought a new Chevy a few years ago. The frame cracked...there was no accident or any kind of damage done to the car and you wouldn't even notice unless you put it up on a rack.

My sister didn't suspect anything until the transmission went out. She had the dealership repair the transmission. The warranty ran out and she had the dealer repair it again.

When the trans went out again, she went to a private shop. The mechanic said he could rebuild it, but it wouldn't last. The frame was cracked causing a misalignment which ruins the rear seal.

She couldn't get any help from GM, so she traded the car in for a new Toyota. He told the salesman the truth, but he took it anyway.

Two weeks later he calls her demanding the Toyota back. She agrees as long as the dealership would put in writing their reason for wanting to cancel the deal.

She explained she would be forced to sue GM and she needed at least a letter from Toyota that she could use in court.

Toyota then decided:" a deal is deal and please enjoy your new Toyota."

True story.

my wife had bought a new 89 Z24, it stalled all the time, and I had counted 16 fitment problems with the car,,

I took the car 3 or 4 times to have the stalling problem fixed,,

the last time I took it to be fixed for the stalling the car was at the dealer for 3 work days.. the dealer called me and told me there was nothing wrong with the car,
I went to the dealer and the mechanic, service manager and some other big wig was waiting for me, all 3 stood side by side a good 15ft away from the car, that made me feel funny, I asked myself if the car was going to blow up when I start it to drive away,, well the service manager said the car did not stall,

so I said "the car doesn't stall", the manager replied and said "no the car doesn't stall"

again I said "the car doesn't stall",

again the manager said "the car doesn't stall",

at that I told the manager to give me the key,, and,, I got into the car and I stated the car 5 times and the car stalled 5 times, it stalled all 5 times I started it, haahaah haaa,,

I got out of the car and the manager said I guess it does stall, I told him to fix it, as I was getting in my dad's van I could her the manager starting the car and it stalled, as we drove off he started the car again and again, it stalled,

2 days the dealler called and the car was not stalling, I drove it home...

so after a couple weeks the car started to stall again, so I took it to the dealer and the manager drove the car but he really got on gas peddle and wet threw the gears bang-bang-bang-bang and raced back to the dealer and got out and said it didn't stall, we argued..

so I filed for Arbitration, the papers were all done and the date was set, and just days before we had to go to Arbitration the Arbitrator had a Heart attack and the Arbitration was set aside for about 7 months,,

finely when we get to Arbitration the service manager shows up, and he lied to the Arbitrator by saying he never drove the car, I basically called him a liar but he stood his ground and said 3 or 4 times he never drove the car,, so,,

so at that the Arbitrator, myself and the Service manager went for a ride in the car, well the car stalled 3 or 4 times in the 6 miles I drove it, and in the end the Arbitrator found in favor for the dealer,

so I said to the Arbitrator >"so the car stalled 3 times in 6 miles, that means it may stall 6 times in 12 miles and it may stall 12 times in 24 miles and it may stall 24 times in 48 miles and you will not find in my favor",, and the Arbitrator still would not find in my favor..

so I stood up and I told the manager and the Arbitrator that I will take that American made car and trade it for a Japanese car and never buy another American made car again,, the 2 just looked each other and the Arbitrator shook his head,
when he went outside to leave the Arbitrator got into his Subaru and left,

a few weeks later we received an official letter from the Arbitrator and,, get this,, I was informed in that letter that the Arbitrator was contracted and paid for by>>> GMC,,, go friggen figure !!

that Arbitration was don in late 1990, and in early 1991 the wife and I traded the Z24 for a new 4-Runner,,

some 8 years later the wife (not me, I didn't want her to buy it) bought a used Dodge caravan because the kids were bigger and all their friends were too, that van had 1 sliding door,,, 2 years later she traded it for a newer Dodge caravan that had 2 sliding doors, she got a fantastic deal, they took $5000 of the price, see, my wife kept telling the dealer we can not afford the price, and 3 months later we got a call and they dropped the price by the $5000, it was used, we never found proof it was in an accident, they just had to move it, but never the less as the van got older it sure became a junk while my 4-Runner was 15 years old and may have been rusted but it was mechanically sound,,

when the 4Runner was 15 years old (in 2006) we traded it for a 04 Toyota Van and still drive it today, it's a good van, it's a better van LOL,,,, then last year the wife traded the last Dodge van for a new Camry,,

what did you say about your sister's new Chevy,, I was at my friends auto repair shop just 3 weeks ago, had to rebalance a tire, they had there a 2012 (only 5 yeas old) Chevy pickup and the frame was so rusted it was splitting, it couldn't be inspected

My mother-in-law bought a new Malibu in 78, but she didn't drive it much.

In about 1992, the trans went out at about 48,000 miles.

She have it replaced by a private mechanic.

Heck, I didn't care how old it was, I just felt it should have lasted longer than 48,000 miles.

I call BBB and they sent me a form and I filled it out.

A few weeks later I got a call from GM laughing because they couldn't believe some idiot would request warranty on a 14 year old car.

I told him I understood, but the car was never driven more than 100 miles on a one way trip by a little old lady.

He said he believed they could look at about 50% and that would be more than fair.

I countered with I would prefer to go to small claims court because I felt they would be sympathetic to a little elderly, church going, widow when compared to the mega corporation GM.

There was silence and then he said they would like to pay the full amount.

My mother-in-law got her money.

They sent the full refund.

People get lucky sometimes.

Come on guys, he is not your second coming:

GM responded that Chevrolet Cruze sedans sold in the U.S. are made in Ohio. The company builds the Cruze hatchbacks in Mexico, but the company said only a small number of them are sold in the U.S. In November, CNN reported, GM sold about 16,400 Cruzes in the U.S., and that about 1,600 of them were Mexican-made hatchbacks.
On Jan. 17, GM announced that it was investing $1 billion in U.S. manufacturing operations, resulting in 1,500 “new and retained” jobs.
GM also announced that it would be moving work on axle production for pickup trucks from Mexico to Michigan, creating 450 jobs. And the company said it would be insourcing more than 6,000 IT jobs that were formerly outside the U.S., according to GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra. Together with “streamlining our engineering operations from seven to three, with the core engineering center being in Warren, Michigan, and building on our momentum at GM Financial and in advanced technologies,” she said, “these moves, and others, are expected to result in more than 5,000 new jobs in the U.S. over the next few years.”

Trump again added some Twitter praise.

But GM leaders stressed that the investments in the U.S. were part of a longtime trend. The company noted that it has announced investments of $2.9 billion in the U.S. in 2016 — and more than $21 billion since 2009.

The insourcing of IT jobs, in particular, has been part of an ongoing strategy. The company’s press release states:

GM press release, Jan. 17: GM’s announcement is part of the company’s increased focus on overall efficiency over the last four years. With a strategy to streamline and simplify its operations and grow its business, GM has created 25,000 jobs in the U.S. − approximately 19,000 engineering, IT and professional jobs and 6,000 hourly manufacturing jobs – and added nearly $3 billion in annual wages and benefits to the U.S. economy over that period. At the same time, GM reduced more than 15,000 positions outside the U.S., bringing most of those jobs to America. During that period, the company moved from 90 percent of its IT work being outsourced to an insourced U.S.-based model.

being a victim of the "dot com" bust of 2001... I can tell you this much, a corporation may plan 4 - 6 - 10 years out, but a single WTF moment, and they can revise their plans over night.

case in point. I used to work as an industrial systems programmer for a small company, 80% of our work went to Dell computer in Austin Tx. at it peak, we couldnt keep up with the work load, with Dells constant new projects to increase productivity over the last project that was just completed 30 days ago. They (Dell) had thousands of engineers, IT, and database people, they were buying up real estate in Austin for more plants, in Tennessee too.... then the bubble burst. Projects long planned, were cut. the projects in progress stopped and we found ourselves with no more projects from Dell. We would visit Dell (Sales and checkup calls) and one day, an entire floor of techs were let go... we found most of them sucking on margaritas at a "bring your pink slip get a free drink" mexican restaurant.

So dont fall for this BS, that a corporation has had plans for years.... that may be true, but plans are directly affected by money. nothing is written in stone when it comes to corporate plans. They pivot overnight to suit the environment. the days of slow reaction from top companies is over.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

Hurts your heroes Obama, Bernie, and Hillary doesn't give a big rats about the American people and their jobs doesn't it?

They wouldn't even try to talk to companies to bring jobs back here.

They only want what they can steal from the American taxpayer.

And now the leftist try to minimize Trump efforts because they despise the deplorable American taxpayer.

No matter what Trump does or doesn't do from here on out, he's already scored the biggest win that could be done for the world:

HE KEPT THE CLINTON CRIME CLAN OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE.

I checked with my wife and she said go for it. Does your cousin go for pilots? I just need a little air in my new home built "Cloud Buster 88". Give me her zip code and I'll google a flight path.

Here is me with my plane...you can see the pride on my face.
