Wondering how many if any take a portable solar charging station with them to a the field/funflies...

I have 2 24v 20w panels that i wire in parallel to charge right now a 12v battery. Saving to get two 35ah batteries wired in series. Which should allow me to charge my 6s 4500s, 4s 5000s, 6s 1800s, and 3s 2200s at least once at the field. Which adds up to 32 flights...

Here is the test setup... was charging the little 12v battery at 2.4 amps in good sun.

Having evaluated solar charging as an option myself...

Don't forget to deduct properly from you 35ah capacity to prevent over discharging your supply/source batteries. They should not be depleted below 50%, so you realistically can discharge half of the 35ah rating. Realize you CAN take them into a deeper discharge, but if they are not deep cycle batteries you will quickly kill them.

You could realistically only charge 3 x 5,000mah batteries a single time, and you would have to charge them very slowly to not over-amp the sealed batteries. They are typically not designed to handle high currents.

A solar system that can keep up with field charging you desire would cost several times as much as buying a small quiet suitable generator. The generator provides instant power, and does so regardless of the quality of the sun.

Enjoy things that money can buy IF you don't lose the things money can't buy.

Thank you for the info... My average flight is only 5-6 minutes and only use 40-50% of the batteries. I just like to put around in the sky...

I'd love to go solar, but I typically charge two 6s 4400mAh (or larger) at 3C when I'm at the field. That requires a minimum of ~670 watts.

Here is a quick link to what i am using to figure out how my small charging station will hold up. One thing to remember that all batteries arrive at the feild fully charged.

Quick update on my charge setup...

I finally got my deep cycle batteries in and a couple watt meters to measure how much energy i am using.

Setup:
2 12v 35ah wired in series for 24v
2 24v 20w panels

So charging using 1 6s/1800 pack at 1amp pulled 5wh over a 45 min period. Solar put about 5wh over a 1.5 hour time period back into the batteries..

Next test will be to charge my bigger packs for the TDR... till then i am going flying

No... my understanding was with sealed deep cycle batteries i did not need venting..

Not for venting the batteries but for the heat produced by the chargers ?

Edit: I think I see... charger is not contained in that box.....

I was not able to mount the chargers in the box... there is the solar charging panel and two volt/amp meters mounted in it..

One meter is mounted between the solar panel and charge controller. The other is mounted between the battery and outputs.

That box you made (assumption) is very nice. I would stain it and varnish after doing some wood burning an outline of a helicopter and your name.

I think about the hereafter. I go somewhere to get something, then wonder what I'm here after ?
