What should the gyro gain be at for a first time flyer cause I get it off the ground to hover and the tail spins to the left

Check the manual for the correct orientation of your gyro and if your rudder channel is neutral. Your gyro possibly needs reversing.
Too much gain will make the tail wag, not turn

More Information

Be more specific. What heli, motor, gyro, radio, etc. You get the idea.

I agree, thinking gyro or tail reversing. How fast does it turn? Gonna have to check out the manual for your gyro for the recommended starting gyro gain setting. In my experience (wth a spectrum radio, its around 35%)other transmitters are different

I agree with the above posts. Tail spinning isn't a result of too low gain, but rather gyro reversal or some other setup issue.

Good luck.

Yes, you may setup it wrongly.
