Hi,
Are there any modifications required to install the OS 1.05 engine in a Freya EX2 SWM and a Freya OP SWM SSL-II as far as main gear ratios and the short shaft engine are concerned? Thanks

Are you saying you have the short shaft motor? If yes, then I believe you will need the fan hub from the V2 Turbulence.
Gear for 7.9 or 8.27 for Fai or 3D, respectively.

Short shaft

Hi Dr Ben,

Thanks for the reply. I don't have the motor yet. Just probing. I saw one at Super RC in Osaka, a shop I frequent and I'm thinking of buying it to try on my EX-II SWM SSZ-III with flybar. This heli currently has an OS 91 SZ and retains its setup from my last contest which was the 2007 FAI F3C Worlds in Poland. I also have a good offer from Hirobo for a Freya OP SWM SSL-II and thinking of getting it at a later date and eventually use the OS 1.05 on this Freya.

I gather from the other replies that the current edition of the OS 1.05 is with a standard shaft. How do I confirm which shaft a motor has when I purchase it? Does it bear a certain designation?. Apparently, for practical reasons, I should stick with the normal shaft to keep things simple. Then all I need to worry about is the gearing.

Thanks for the replies!

I don't think OS are making the 105HZ with short shaft anymore. I think most people just cut the shaft down anyway if they used it in the D3 V2 with shorter fan hub.

I actually still use the normal OS105HZ without the short shaft in my D3 V2 anyway. Just need to use Freya or D3 V1 fan hub. Motor sits a little lower and there's a gap between the fan shroud and clutch but I can still swap motors between my D3 V1 & V2 without issue. If I cut the shaft down then I'm stuck unless I replace the shaft.

The gear ratio's I would think are the same but I haven't actually checked. There was no change from the OS91HZ to the OS105HZ as they had the rpm range and have the same case size. They just produce more power or more importantly, more torque over the 91HZ.

Just looking at the Freya manual, you will not be able to use the short shaft OS105HZ in the Freya anyway. The ideal behind it was for the D3V2 so you could raise the motor higher and with it the CoG making the heli more agile.

The plastic frames of the Freya don't allow the extra the extra 5-7mm of movement vertically in the engine mounts so I would keep to the standard motor shaft. Again, I don't think they make the short shaft version anymore, the LE version I believe is standard shaft anyway. Worse case you could order the short shaft and changeover if you wanted. I'm sure I could find the part number somewhere.

As mentioned before, I don't believe the short shaft OS 105 HZ are available anymore. Have not for a while unless you can find one that's been sitting in a hobby shop for a while. If you need the short shaft for the D3 V2 then just cut the shaft down yourself.

There might be a crankshaft available to buy from OS but I am not sure of the part number as I don't have a manual and OS don't have the manual on their website for the short shaft.

Very nice. If you can't get the gearing you want i can provide custom gear ratios.
