I have used maybe 100 LiPo's over the years. For the first time, I have one that's bad straight out of the package. I just received it two weeks ago.

11.1v 3000mAh battery. I was going to storage charge it. When I hooked it up to my 408, the voltage readings went crazy. I swapped sides and one cell wouldn't even read. I also changed out the balance cord and adapter. Same thing. I might have had it on "storage" 10 seconds. Then I tried "charging" it. All charge setting were correct.

WELL, luckily I had the battery in my hand and I noticed it got warm very quick. I felt the wires to see if they were hot.

Then I noticed the battery "swelling". I immediately pulled the power cord and balance board off the battery. I then placed it on a brick.

I think if it would have been on the charger another 15 seconds, it would have caught fire.

I have and will continue to use LiPo's very carefully. I am glad I just didn't put it on charge and then get up and start doing something else.

First Arrive..

I have gotten in the habit, over the years I have been using e-power, of checking each new battery when it arrives..
I use my meter that checks each cell.. it's not often, but you can get a bad cell.. safer then going directly to the charger..
Just a thought ..

I got rid of it the same day. I didn't want it anywhere near me.

The battery came in a Blade Micro kit, 120 size. I bought the kit for a Christmas Present and I decided to check it out first.

GOOD thing I did. I don't remember the name on the battery.

Usually when I get a new battery, I hook up the balance lead to my 406 charger just to see each cell's voltage. It's pretty quick this way. One cell was going all over the place. I thought it was a balance lead or bad board. I tried the second bank with separate leads and balance board and cables. Same thing. I tried a known good battery. It worked fine.

So I hooked up the battery again and it would not even go into storage mode. When I tried to charge the battery, that's when everything happened. I immediately disconnected it and threw it in a LiPo charging bag, then put it on a brick. After about 10 minutes making sure it wasn't going to catch on fire, I took it outside, put a nail through the middle of it, then after a day I discarded it.

I wish I would have remembered the name, but it wasn't worth even pursuing.

On my experience, bad lipo is always cells with lower voltage that refuse to charge.
Cells with zero voltage...

When you said bad lipo, you mean bad conector lead... Leaking cells, bad soldering wires or what else?

Bad Cell, I didn't open it up, it could have been the wiring, but it only took less than 15 seconds for it to puff almost twice the original size.

I still had it outside to make sure it was NOT a danger to anyone.

By the way, it was a LECTRON PRO 7.4V 2000mAh battery.

Merry Christmas,
Dennis
