I personally am proof of what Roy has said. I have been to Dalton 3 times, IRCHA 2 time. and have "NEVER" flown my scale bird at either. The knowledge I have gained at these events is beyond what I could have predicted. So if you are holding back for that reason. Please don't. And if you want to hang with us newbee's. I am not hard to miss, just look for the guy looking at everone els's heli in amazement.....

I retire in about 20 days. I will finally be able to dedicate time to this hobby like I've always wanted.
wish it worked that way. I seem to have less time for my hobby than when I worked..........................................

I would like to participate in one Scale competition weather it be TG or Nationals. I hear a lot of contraversy over the way both are ran and have taken a back seat to see if things get better. When I think of TopGun I think of the best built helicopter I could imagine and last years 1st place was well deserved and what I look forward too in competing against, the NATS I really don't see that as much. There are a lot of scale builders out there that have the machine for both events to compete in. I can see TopGun having more competitors because of the lower stress and that is apealing to a lot of people. Location is also a factor for most of here on the west side. There are scale events here and on the east but nothing where we can meet in the middle? Maybe this would bring more of us from the west coast and everyone together.

Hope you all have a great Christmas and healthy, happy and safe New Year!

I'm just wondering how many guys are planning on competing in the 2017 Scale Nats....????
I will be there..
Thanks Emile but that's why the "Sportsman" class and the "Team scale"
For a long time pilots were asking for "team Scale" and a "sportsman class" in the NATS. now we have it, but no participation.
My .02$ and from what I have heard is two fold.. the first is (as Emile mentioned) the fear that they or their equipment isn't good enough for "that level" of competition...
I've been at this for a while now and at some point felt that I was not ready for "that level" of competition. I decided to go for it and have fun....best move I ever made, It was FUN

Taylor, I competed in both, trust me, the quality of the helicopters, the rules, stress level and weather are the same at both events

I am not gonna lie, flyig in a contest is at first very terrifying! I know it was for me and still is at times. I know for sure there are several guys who have the time to make every event there is or at least most of them, but the fear of flying what they may have in front of a group is terrifying. The only way to cure that is to just do it. it gets better and less terrifying with each time. As an added bit of comfort, you will find like Roy said, the best group of guys who will help and encourage and bend over backwards to help you along. The same guys you are competing against will be the same guys calling and or coaching you thru your maneuvers and getting you squared away. Really the only thing you need to do is make the effort to be there.

In all actuality... get that first one under your belt. Is it nerve wracking? Yes! Is it stressful? Yes indeed! Will you regret it? Absolutely not!!!!
And, after the first one, it will just feel like flying at the club field with your buddies... and for good reason,, you will be.!
The guys that do this will bend over backwards to help you in anyway you. need it. As far as the competition goes,
(My opinion here) it really doesn't matter who takes the "gold"..... everyone wins!!!

Let me start by saying I have never competed or attended the NATS or Top Gun although I have wanted too. For me the issue with the Nats is the location and timing. It's at least a 12 hour drive during one of the busiest times for my work. My feeling is if I'm going to travel all that way I'm going to want to stay for both the Nats and IRCHA and I just can't afford to take the time away from my job.

I have been to Dalton several times and that is a great event with a ton of scale helicopters and some of the best people I've ever met. But let me say this even though it's not a competition it is still very intimidating for me to fly at Dalton in front of some of the best in this hobby. But the amount of learning and knowledge gained is awesome.

I have competed in the Len Mount competitions down in Crowley, LA for the past three years and that has been a great experience. The competition is very laid back and Len, Mike and Eric go out of their way to help and make you feel relaxed and more confident. I also noticed that there are a good number of competitors at this event from all skill levels and everyone is encouraged to participate. The idea behind the competition is to help you prepare and practice for the Nats and/or Top Gun.

I'm not a huge competitor for me its about getting together with people who share similar interests and showing off to one another what we do and learning how to improve. This is a great hobby for me that I enjoy. It helps me relax and unwind from the stresses of life not add to them.

You can count me in for another event in Panama City, FL, that would be awesome.

Top gun will go on, just no helicopter scale portion. This year is the first time in several years that scale helix have been abpart if top gun. It was attempted a while back for I think two years but for whatever reason, it didn't work out. Some time after, it was sorta regenerated znd renamed "Top Fun" and held in Sanford Florida. That was a freakin blast and I went every year it was held (4 yrs I think) it SAS not exactly a contest but more a fun fly with several fun fly type events but it was all scale and lots of fun. I think Panama City can be just as much fun as well n I'm only an hr and a half from there.

I am a self-proclaimed contest JUNKIE.. Most that know me know this. I will race raindrops down a windshield if I can figure out how to make mine better or go faster..
I have NOT been contesting scale helis very long, about 5 years, but this is relative to ones idea of time.
I want to win.. BUT don’t put too much at stake on this.. I expect I will shake another’s hand for that big win and to me this is great too!
I want to feel the hair stand up on the back of my neck and that’s why I contest. I don’t have great helicopters BUT I aspire to build better. The community of people help with that and it’s a wonderful thing.
Most people say.. nice heli.. when they mean… you brought that same old piston popping POS you have been flying for the last 5 years.. lol. The heli guys are super nice!
I live about as far north as one can get her in the US which keeps me grounded from a lot of travel. Central Florida is about 24 hour drive for me. I am a contest JUNKE and that’s a tough one… even for a top gun type of event. Muncie is 11 to 12 hours for me.
Most don’t know I suffer from Macular Degeneration and driving this type of distance is an EVENT in itself.. I get sick and all that BS.. (My problem…whatever)
I have a full-time Engineering job, and aggressive retirement program and a fantastic wife. All of which I need to take care of. I doubt I am alone in this.
WE NEED MORE EVENTS IN MORE CITYS. I DO have the facility and “some” time so with a little support CAN AND WILL host a CONTEST and see if I can start to pull some pilots out of the wood work. Not sure it will happen this year but I can mull it around with our RC Club (Which BTY had 3 events last year. Two went VERY WELL!). One was a scale airplane contest and we had people from Ohio and Kentucky come. (the facility is TOP KNOTCH!)
NOTES: Durand WI is 1 hour from the Minneapolis -St, Paul metro, About 1 hour from Eau Clare, about 5 1/2 hours from Chicago 4 ½ hours from Milwaukee and about 3 ½ hours from Madison WI.
There must be AT LEAST 5 scale heli pilots in those areas that “might” be interested in contesting.
To sum it up.. its going to take a grass roots effort to build a populist of contest pilots. Without them there is nobody to fly at a nats contest. (not in the numbers one would expect). 3 contest classes are not too many and in my experience not enough but building classes is not a concern.
Fun flys are great.. but.. they don’t typically ‘kick” somebody over the edge. As we have been talking about its hard to get somebody to give it a go. Even If the fun flys had a Concourse contest.. or a pilots choice, or Darrell Sprayberry Craftsmanship award, or a Stan Kopski Friendship award or a .. you get it…….. give em a taste!

That’s all from me… Not sure I can make the nats this year but we will see. I will not make the trip for an undescribed number of contestants.
LETS CONTEST!

Being fairly new to bigger scale, minus a couple of 450s, my 600 size was being built when I went to Top Gun earlier this year. I was really looking forward to maybe flying in it this year. My problem is that I don't know if my building or flying is "good enough" but I would like to try. So Panama is sounding good.

Top Gun

I believe HHF would be willing to host a Scale Helicopter Top Gun in Huntsville. I believe we have a big enough patch of mowed grass and we are a little more centrally located than Panama Beach. Granted it isn't Panama Beach but we do have rockets and good food.

I wonder if I turn HSM into a competition event that we might have more entrants coming from other states or internationally? Big prices not an issue if you are for that sort of thing. 2017 it's going to be a massive HSM in California including night flying and other cool new items that would be announce later. I also working on a massive personal project that hopefully will be ready for HSM but I will not tell until the event..... suspense and drama it's coming to you

Hey Gonzo,
why don't we call HSM, "HSM/Top Gun West"?? Make the event a left coast thing, while the right coast guys can do "Helicopter Top Gun East". That creates a friendly rivalry between the 2 coasts and might bring out more competitors overall. The left coast flyers ALL know that our event is a low pressure, run what ya brung kind of atmosphere. Food for thought...
By the way, I know what Gonzo's big project is and I can definitely say that it's going to knock EVERYONES sox off!!! You don't want to miss the 2017 event...

Top Gun at Dalton

I suggested this to Darrell last week that maybe we should think about having a "Top Gun" competition at the beginning of the week during the Dalton fun fly. Of course I wouldn't want to take anything away from the fun and relax atmosphere of the fun fly but I guess it would really be up to the people that regularly attend if they would be open to this. And if Darrell wants to take this extra bit on...of course he would have my help and I'm sure help of others. But I really guess it would all come down to how much interest there is in having something like this. So I guess if you are interested, then you will have to let Darrell know. Thanks! Mark

As far as "TopGun" at Dalton is concerned.. I think along the lines of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"?
Dalton is ( and always has been) a great event that is more like a "family picnic" with some flying added to it..
To make it more than that (I think) would change the dynamics and not add anything positive....
Sometimes "competition" just isn't needed???
Just my opinion...
