I asked Frank Tiano, on Facebook today,if there were going to be helicopters at his Top Gun event this year, and he said;

Frank Tiano
I think we'll have to pass on Helicopters for 2017. Just a little too much difficulty to organize in a way we are accustomed to. Perhaps in the future.

I saw that! its too bad, we had a blast and even the Jet guys enjoyed coming over and seeing the rotory side of scale as well as us heli scalers enjoyed going over to the jet side of it. quite a shame.

Sorry to hear that guys. But it just so happens that we have a great facility here in Panama City Florida. And would be happy to put on an event to replace the one lost. Maybe I can get Emile to help me coordinate the event. We have plenty of power with 2 100 amp service and lots of room for parking and pop up canopies. There is room for some rv's but no rv connections. Just a thought.

Thats interesting. I wonder what he organized that was so difficult. Get a patch of grass mowed, buy some hats with our names on and 10 different trophies and leave the rest to Darrell.

Now, if Darrell had said he didn't want to organize it I could understand it as it was a heck of a lot of work for him and as usual, it ran like clockwork.

Oh well, Panama City it is.

Why Bother??

This info should have been finalized with Darrell/Frank... but same as last year, the stories changed with the temperatures...one day it's all good, and the next day it wasn't going to happen..
If he doesn't want us there, well then, it is his game, and his call...
I say let it go before it turns into a he said, she said bag-O-sh** !!!

Top Gun for heli's only

I agree with Stan.

Darrell has done everything he can to make this work along with doing a great job last year but the bottom line is this is Frank's event and he has every right to do what he wants.

If enough people really feel strongly enough about this, then we should have our own Top Gun for just the helicopter community. But of course this is much easier said then done...just ask Darrell. And from the turn out at the last few NAT's, I just don't think our community has the support nor the numbers to make this fly...no pun intended.

Agreed!

I would like to see our own event, but as Mark said, we don't have a big enough group, and the work that it takes to organize something like this requires a LOT of time and prep..
Let's just get out there and have a good time (Dalton!!!) at NATS, IRCHA, and wherever else "someone else" is holding an event we can support!!

I know I haven't been a part of this competition yet but this is what I was thinking for an event. Just a friendly Fun Fly Competition event. You all know your competition format so there is really not a lot of coordinating to do and we do it for bragging rights. Treat it as a fun fly and we all just get together.

We would love to put it on here in Panama City. Our facility is designated for helicopters only. There is an airplane facility a few 100 yards away on the same property.

Maybe in a couple of years we can turn it into an official event but for now just have a good time.
Anyway, it will not hurt my feelings if it doesn't happen, just want to let you know the offer is there.

Heli Events

As Stan stated, there are a number (few) of "scale" events across the country. It's just that Frank (Top Gun) has created this persona of attracting the best in the world when it comes to planes and jets (and he does). And there are a number of reason why this has worked for the Scale plane community and not the Scale heli community. I just don't see the "scale heli" community being as big nor able to make something like "Top Gun" a success on it's own. The Scale NAT's is considered our prestige event and we only had 2 competitors last year.

Dennis, it's great that you offered your club for an event but please don't take this the wrong way, if you and the club want to have an event, then you guys are going to have to make it happen. Which as Stan and I have stated, it takes a lot of time and effort (and some money) to make something like this happens. We can never have too many heli events in the country.

I have the facility and the help. The cost to me is a non issue (we would make the event pay for itself).

IF..I toss enough cash and prizes at this who is coming? What about the below..

Would it take.. 500 dollars in prizes
Would it take 1000 dollars in prizes
Would it take 5000 dollars in prizes
More (money talks?)
Is it an amount at all.

Do you want sponsor support, vendors on site?

Do you want bragging rights?
Do you want fame?

How far will you drive for all this fame and fortune? 10 miles, 100 miles 1000 miles

How long ya willing to stay.. a weekend.. a week.. longer?

Whats in it for me (or the organizer)..fame, money, a bitching at...

TOP GUN is a contest and a good one.. the best of the best
The Hydro Masters is a contest and a good one.. the best of the best.
The heli...................................... do we have one that meets this.. is it the IRCHA contest now?

What constituents a successful contest..5 people, 10, 30?

Just a few things that come to mind.

I have personal and professional limitations like most.. but I can answer most of these, who else can?

Always good to think and talk though stuff like this.

I think the lack of participation in the NATS this year was what I call the "Top Gun Effect" Being part of a well known established event that attracts the "best of the best" may have made it attractive and a priority to some. I think we also need to keep in mind that, not everyone has the time and resources to attend multiple events. I feel that the NATS should be our "TOP GUN" event. The timing of(IRCHA NATS) gives us two events within the same week. The time invested in building a "TOP GUN" or a "NATS" quality helicopter, is the same, so why not focus on rebuilding the status the NATS once had?

My intent was to simply alert anyone that might have been making plans ( like me?) to the fact it wasn't going to happen... and the fact it came "from the horses mouth" I thought would be "accurate reporting"...
I guess for some people.. it "is" all about the money....?
