It's the latest craze! More drones sold now than helis. Ask anybody and if they don't have a drone they will know someone who has! They are so much more accessible to people than helis.

Drones' have an appeal to the youth and their attention span is limited. This is why so many go up for sale.

I have a small one, with 12 years of rc heli flying, I've gotten the hang of it pretty quick. I did find a link for an experimental one that you can modify, which looks interesting.

I would like to try a bigger one, was thinking about a DJI or similar, but I can't justify spending that kind of money, on a toy right now.

Everyone wants one till they have one and it sits in a corner then finally gets dumped on Flea Bay or C/L

Telescopes, boats, jet skis. It's not only the youth that lack attention span.

They have their practical uses... I use 3 for a small commercial operation. Otherwise they are rather boring.

I am rather looking forward to the "fad" being over!

I agree with sceadu, they are a bit boring.
Learning curve with my small Tecbean. Week two, nose in.
Was set to do a trade on one, and then thought,
See no real use for now.
I don't know, I think I'm getting one little bigger for
holiday.
With so many being price cut on Ebay, after x-mas price dropping is going to be spectacular.
Aerial videos going to be seriously de-valued.
Other issue is, with the entry barrier so low,
and the ability to use the Ipad link,I
would imagine, the realtors wanting a aerial of their property's can just
get one to do their own. A lot of the realtors are pretty
internet/computer savvy now,and after looking at the dJI
downlink specs, they can figure it out, if I can.

I think a big part of why you see so my drones for sale is because they are being rapidly improved by their manufacturers and are perfectly non-upgradeable. It seems like DJI just released their Phantom 4 and Inspire and both have been substantially upgraded to a newer spec. Right now drones are evolving rapidly and manufacturers seem to have adopted the Microsoft marketing strategy of planned obsolescence.

The Phantom 4 introduced collision avoidance- but only forward facing. Completely predictably, DJI just released the Phantom 4 Pro which now has collision avoidance in all directions. If you bought a 4 and now wanted a 4 Pro, what would you do with the older one?

A relatively recent change in this hobby is the number of people in it simply to acquire things. The newer and more recent the better. For too many in the hobby today it's all about the unboxing. Drones are more than willing to help. An example might be the DJI Phantom 3. It's still the drone it always was but now they are yesterdays model and under 400 buck from Best Buy. If it was simply about flying, drones or FPV, the Phantom 3 would still be both popular and expensive. As it is, you can't give them away.

Didn't know they are not upgradeable.
That's pretty smart on the part of DJI.
The FPV looks like it would be fun.
I did manage to watch about 2 minutes of the
drone race tv show, it's pretty boring, to me anyhow.

Wife got me the QVC Orion. Did post a video of my shortest flight yet.Very under powered. Video glitched from possible motor interference. In 5-6 mph wind, had to push both sticks to top just to fly into headwind.
Light gusts, pushed it backwards, decided to land it ,and return it. Did not fly like one I watched on Youtube. Also the video was pretty good, nothing at all like this one.

There is a much larger market for drones so I'm not surprised more of them show up in craigslist than do radio control pod and boom helicopters.

There are a bunch of Youtube videos, only unboxing. When you go to the person's other videos, there are rarely flight videos.
Unusual phenomenon, that supports wjvails observation, as quoted.

You make an excellent point about the unboxing. What the heck?! I have this crazy fleet of flybarred nitro helis. Nearly all of them at least second hand. It's about the machines and flying them. I have never had inclination to post a video of opening something. I've seen the same unboxing video silliness with gun/ammo stuff and precious metals.

I can't take credit for recognizing the "unboxing video phenomenon".
It's wjvail that posted it.
