I bought a used 500 and I'm just curious as to how I know which version I have when grabbing replacement parts? It's a flybar bird with a torque tube tail drive setup.

Silver frames like this one (?) ;

OR,
Black CF frames similar to this one (?) ;

It's a flybar bird with a torque tube tail drive setup.
More than likely it's the V1 with the later version tail-drive (TT) which I believe would be the T-Rex 500SE version.

If black frames, they are carbon fiber type (those silver ones I have pictured are glass fiber (or fiberglass)).

Also,
Your front Cyclic servo mounts should be @ 90 degrees (like the silver frames pictured).
The angle-mounted servos on my black cf frames are an upgrade frame-set from CHP (Custom Heli Parts)

I don't believe that Align ever designated the T-Rex 500 as a V2 model (like their earlier T-Rex 450's) so with TT Tail it is the ESP.

The versions for the 500 are as follow: E, ESP, EFL Pro, "L" Dominator and it is in that order.

E - Belt drive

ESP - battery tray drops down and torque tube.

Pro - narrower frame tail servo mounts in the frame, also different tail
ratio.

L - different frame setup

The one with the angled servos has a RC-Tek head on it. Also never seen a frame like the angled servos. Don't know about that one.

Thanks for clearing that up it has been some time since I owned a T-Rex 500
(I edited my earlier post)

You can find the frames in either GF (glass-fiber) or CF (carbon-fiber) here ;
http://customheliparts.com/store/align-t-rex/t-rex-500

CHP also makes the G-10 servo-arms (notice how the Futaba round horns are used with these) as well as many other parts for other applications (I use their full-sized CF servo-plates on all my builds).
The one with the angled servos has a RC-Tek head on it.
IIRC http://www.rc-tek.com is where the fbl head-assemblies are sold.
On my CHP CF-framed T-Rex 500 I was running the entire I2RC fbl set-up (fbl head, swash, main shaft) and you could ask for custom CNC engraving on the head-button if you wanted it.
Myself and Jag72 had a bit-of a build-war going on to see who could build the "baddest" T-Rex 500, not sure who actually won

The original E frames suck because they don't have the step down for the battery tray. They give you less room for a battery.

I remember that there were a few guys that actually moved the tray "down" and re-drilled the holes for mounting just to get a little more room for their packs.

I believe that the EX style of canopy allowed me a bit more room for this because of it's design.

Yes, you can cut and re-drill the frame. My original frame was done up that way. Once I started using the EX canopy, I used it exclusively. I like the EX canopy so much better. Actually Fusuno makes the EX canopy. The one I use, I have to order straight from them, but is a fantastic paint scheme. I have one that I will more than likely not be using soon because I plan on switching to the Dominator frame.
