The fun is being sucked out. I suppose the next thing to go will be fun flies...
they have in my area actually... I have to drive nearly two hour to go to a "decent" one that happens maybe twice a year at best.

Jeez

I have to drive nearly two hour to go to a "decent" one that happens maybe twice a year at best.
Well let's see...most of mine are probably over 2 hours away...

Burlington, MA, 40 miles, 1 hour
Tewksbury, MA, 60 miles, 1 hour 10 minutes
Salem, CT, 85 miles, 1 hour 45 minutes
Lee, MA 115 miles, 2 hours
Canaan, NH, 152 miles, 3 hours
Boisbriand, Montreal, 325 miles, 6 hours
Lums Pond, DE, 325 miles, 7 hours (more traffic)
Fredericksburg, VA, 500 miles, 10 hours (sometimes x 2 spring and fall)
New Brunswick, Canada, 540 miles, 11 hours
Muncie, IN, 900 miles, 16 hours
Orlando, FL, 1300 miles, 20 hours

These are the ones I can remember off the top of my head, so sorry no sympathy for you...!

yeah but you have 4 within 2 "driving" hours of your location... I have 1 maybe two twice a year... and they dont cater to Helis... Waco Tx and one near Austin Tx.

theres a big difference... and you if have to board a flight or drive more than a day... its no longer a hobby... it a way of life.

Im on a budget and have "other" obligations that put spending an entire weekend and a significant amount of my paycheck on playing with a flying toy way back on the to-do list.

Dang Jeremy! Nothing like a little bit of "doom & gloom". Maybe I should just get out of the hobby. Why spend anymore money on a sinking ship? Stop doing the things I love... Bailout now while I can still get something back versus throwing it all away. I mean really, who is going to buy all this junk once the hobby end?
Ray, where was I spreading doom and gloom?

Somebody above was predicting Hobbico would go under and I was trying to explain whats really happening there - at least what we know.

I DON'T generally jump into all the hysteria "the hobby is dying" posts... I can point you to lots of discussions on those topics here, at Helifreak, at FlyingGiants, at RCU and elsewhere where I have participated and promoted the hobby. I've participated in just about every aspect of the hobby except CL, jets and sailplanes. Im a life member AMA. I am not going anywhere.

However we cannot deny that:

Airplane kit building is in a severe decline. I never see people show up with kit built sport or aerobatic models now. Kit building is at best 10% of the traffic of FlyingGiants and ccale is the only discipline where building is still dominant.

Glow is going away. I almost NEVER see new pilots show up with glow anything at our club.

Local hobby shops are going away. There used to be 4 or 5 within a 20 minute drive of me. Now the closest one is about an hour.

Organized contest participation is dying off. The local scale masters qualifier stopped a few years ago due to low attendance. I am told pattern contests are ghost towns. They say the XFC has fallen off. IMAC contests still seem to have some popularity at least and lots of sailplane guys participate in the soaring league conststs.

Jeremy,

It's not "you are spreading it", it's talking about the negative. The more people talk about this hobby dying, in time it "will" die. It's like a bad virus, it keeps eating away at the very heart of this hobby. It starts off with a few people noticing closures, and then more people notice, and a large group starts talking about the end of nitro's or electric's or jet's, etc. Next thing you know, people are talking about getting out of the hobby because it is dying. And that becomes bigger and bigger. Before long this hobby will decline by half, and then more product will disappear, and on and on.

For me...I started with nitro motors and fell in love with them. To say nitro is dying, meaning no more nitro motors and nitro fuel, is like kicking me in the balls. Yea, it hurts to hear that, and it might be a fact, but I also hope nitro's will make a comeback and become strong once again. I'm not a big fan of electrics, though I have a few...there just ok. Electrics have great power and a lot of fun...for roughly 5 minutes. I have gas helis as well, and they are ok too. However, they don't have the power to weight ratio...but flight times are a lot longer! But none of those are like that of a nitro. The power to weight ratio is just about right, or in the middle of the two.

With electric helis, you don't need collective management, just power right through any maneuver. Collective management is needed with nitro's. And gas helis...it's all about collective management.

Getting back to the point, it's not just you spreading the "doom & gloom", it's everywhere! Almost everyone is talking about it, and it is getting worse.

Sorry, not blaming you...

Hey Hugh!

Scott at Cajun Aircraft in Louisiana, and direct from Min Air in Germany.

https://www.miniatureaircraftusa.co...e=account/login

New whiplashes are getting the final parts made to complete the kits, I can't nail down a date exactly but I would expect by Spring time or by the time I get back from Jamaica!

See you soon, will that Predator still fly? Can we take it for a check ride?

Raja,

I was doing some research its seems the RC engine is what th MA uses. I wanted to still use my old Zenoah 27PUH
I may just have to keep the PRedator in the air as long as i can until i'm forced to upgrade.

She's not flying as i currently pulled her apart to do some minor maintenance in preparation for flight.

When you come down we'll talk some more

Which is EXACTLY why I responded to that post speculating that Hobbico was in trouble to provide the real information. I'm trying to stop unfounded rumors.

I love glow too ray... If we ever get the chance to meet I can show you my hoarded collection of Saitos. And my Laser V-twin from England. That thing is a piece of man jewelry But I have to face reality that the days of those being mainstream is fading. If we can make small gas 4 strokes as light and reliable I'll take it

I cant help the fact that attendance at contests is down. Maybe talking about it will inspire some new folks to get into one? That's why Ive spent the last 18 months in the basement working on a balsa scale build and plan to take it to the local contests... show people that the traditional hobbies are not dead.

Beautiful helicopter Raja. I've been thinking about getting a Whip as well. I'm so tired of seeing gasser builds that are unpurchasable and personally now I know why gassers are not that popular. It's like pulling teeth to get some of the gassers I see advertised on forums and it just pisses me off and I go elsewhere. It's like the forum builds of these machines is more important than getting the model to the masses. I don't know how many threads are out there with models that are unattainable. People should do their market research elsewhere instead they are alienating potential customers.

Well the marketing of these models, franky, sucks.

The new guys coming into the hobby that only know electric want easy, clean and quiet. Go over to the main room of the freaky site and look at the "Why cant nitros/gassers be quiet?" thread.... 5 pages of complaining about nitro and gas being loud and messy and annoying mostly by people who have only ever seen one in a video.

We put up youtubes of a pro smacking a gas heli with a full pipe on it thinking that it will impress people... but they dont get that its powerful... what they get is an impression that its earshatteringly loud, hard to tune, and takes a lot of maintenance.

We need to show off smoother setups and promote the low hassle operation and economic benefits. Show how liberating it is not to have to haul generators and expensive batteries around. I've tried and tried but we just have to accept that most new guys today simply are not old school gearheads/garage monkeys and dont have gasoline in their blood like we do... so we have to change our marketing to highlight the aspects that will interest this new breed.

Etc...
