Rajas new "girl friend".

wish I had the money and the time. I have yet to rebuild my bird.
would love it more if it was made here and sold here though...

cool heli, look forward to seeing it finished and flying.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

More progress

Well last night was a late night. I started around 5pm and worked until 2am or there abouts with the exception of dinner.

I can't tell you how many times I changed my mind and moved things around. I had to move the generator rectifier a couple of times and the regulator a couple more times, in order to find the best fit so that wires would sit and route perfectly and reach where they need to go. It seems to be the hardest part of the build, like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle. I used the grey tape (with red backing) over and over and threw away a bunch of it, plus several tiewraps and you start something then realize its not situated right move it and start again.

Below are pictures of what I have so far. The last thing was that I glued and clamped the front headlight and rear red taillight from the generator overnight and this morning I took the clamps off and took the pictures.

Before I put the tail on maybe later tonight I'll shoot a youtube video to explain how things went together and post it.

What remains this evening is to program the cyclic servos they are 100% centered and install the rods and check their length. Everything is already programmed in the Demon from Whiplash V1 so that part is set. Also have to install the tail servo horn ball and install the tail. Then while I wait for the Hanson 300 motor to arrive I will go back and continue working on my Taylorcraft build.

I can't believe this

The servo wires over the elevator servo are bugging me.

But this morning while looking at my pictures here I just had a crazy idea. Move the wire harness to the other side so it doesn't have to jump across the elevator servo, and then also move the governor to the other side so the throttle wire doesn't have to cross over. Then the governor sensor wire would be closer to the engine where I need to mount the sensor and I could use the gv-1 mixture port to plug in my fuel tank light from that side which I still have to build and setup.

Urgh, more work! Or...I could just fly it the way it is...what's your vote??

FI, right now, I think I'm just going to go to the field and go fly!

That certainly is a messy wiring job.

Perhaps this concept should be considered...

Video

OK, it was a "slow night" I did a few things to finish the Whiplash as much as possible until the new Hanson 300 motor arrives, maybe tomorrow if not then Saturday.

Installed the tail boom, built a light for the fuel tank, fit the canopy, program centered the servos, and put the cyclic links on and adjusted the length for zero pitch at center stick (eyeballed it, I'll fine tune it at the field as necessary).

I shot a video as promised for you guys to see it live. A couple of things I forgot to mention in the video is that the main shaft bearings are also new now and a better fit to the main shaft compared to the original Whiplash. Also, the tail torque tube is new, anti twist new design carbon fiber with positive lock ends, and if you notice in the video the torque tube end now goes through the tail drive gear in the back all the way so its supported on both ends (no wobble). Lastly, the bell is now 3 bearing supported, 2 on top of the pinion and one right above the bell, not including the one in the bell on the start shaft. You can see how smooth it is and how true the clutch bell runs even without the engine installed. All these updates will make for a smoother machine.

Enjoy the show!

Fantastic . Looks to still be Min Air quality=superb.
Is this kit available now in the states or is this a pre production model?

Setup is everything, All my heli's can fly far better than I can pilot them

It is done!

Only thing I didn't do that I could think of is move wires from left side over rear servo to right side, but that would be just for looks. Anyway, how does it look?? Well take a peek at the pictures, that canopy is sharp! I have to admit, I'm personally drooling...

A couple of the pictures I turned the power on so you can see the tank light. I liked the way I set that up 2nd time around, my mount looks better than the one I did on the Whiplash V1. I guess you get better with experience

Speaking of the Whiplash V1, I pulled the tank out to "copy" it for V2. Found a leak around the tank I decided to redo the whole thing. Mind you its original 1264 flights never been touched, so take a look at the felt clunk that was inside that tank, the thing wore a flat side on it from rubbing inside the tank, amazing...! I just gave it a wash with soap and water, flushed it with gas and put it back in, good to go.

Well, she is ready to maiden. Jeremy wanted to fly it today (Monday) but the weather may not be inviting today, might have to wait until Tuesday we'll see -- I see I need to add her to my signature.

Really a great job! How many flights will you get from that engine before it needs rebuilding or replacing? What fuel and oil mixture? Do you have regular maintenance on the heli you have to do because of vibrations.
I did try a Whiplash gasser a couple of years ago, and didn't have much luck. Engine was hard to start, Not much power compared to electric and nitro. Lots of vibrations.
Looking at your build and .that heli, I may want to give it another try. Any advice or input would be appreciated. You seem to have all the right equipment!

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill

You can get over 1200 flights from an engine before it needs to be refreshed so to speak with a new ring, bearings and seals. I've gone that long as long as you don't damage the engine they run forever compared to nitro motors.

I use 32:1 Penzoil Marine Fully Synthetic oil in mine. Tried many oils over the years, this is the best one I've used so far.

I inspect the heli while I'm cleaning it after flying, and if something needs attention I fix it at home before the next outing.

Not sure why your engines were hard to start? It all depends on choking and proper throttle setup. Right now I have the stock air cleaner box on the new Whiplash as I am missing the bottom plate for the Minair filter (can't find it) and with that even with this brand new engine, I bet its going to start on the 2nd pull. We will see when I run it.

You need to get a modified engine so that the vibrations are under control. Not all engines are created equal and the stock motors will shake alot, especially the larger ones than 23cc.

Anything you need to know just ask, and I'll get this machine in the air tomorrow -- today is very cold and windy, there was snow on the car last night when I stepped out at 2:15am to put the garbage out

Thanks again for the info.
Every time I look at this post I get the urge to hit the "buy button". I think the only thing holding me back right now is waiting to see some flight videos.

Ok I understand now

I used the stock gv-1 sensor on the case of the motor. This way I could keep my kill switch button plus I didn't have any RC stator gators any more only a couple of PUH ones which I was trying to sell in the classifieds as most of my helis (4 out of 5) are RC now not PUH.

I removed the case from the sensor just like I did with the raptor and gooped the sensor to the side of the engine. With the case out, you can get 97% signal if you position it right, though it only needs over 62% technically to work per the manual.

If you want to see it look in the Whiplash V2 build thread and watch the video there, I talk about that at the end of the video.

Wrongler, well tomorrow is going to be breakin day, so I'll have Jeremy shoot a 5 minute video but it will be kind of boring as I'll be running slow speed anyways. The video you want to see should be shot later in Florida next month after the engine is fully broken in. I'll see if I can get Josef to shoot that one for me.
