To be honest

The motor sounds terrible...

And what sort of head speed is he running, doesn't even look like its much more than 1500 per the video.

Nice job on the conversion!!! but I have to agree,,,, the engine sounds a little fat and Head speed sound way too low. Still cool!! XGM/VGM

yeah... agree 100%

flying circuits doesnt prove anything other than it can fly... performance wise, Im not sure its got the balls to do anything other than fly just circuits. I have seen enough videos of sub 20cc engines in 600 class birds trying "mild" 3D and they just didnt cut it, bogging, overheating, and generally liberal temper tantrums when pushed into any sort of collective load.

I applaud his hard work, but as the old saying goes there is no replacement for displacement

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...

That is awesome! I don't mind the sound. A great powerplant for a low head speed machine.

Don't get me wrong

By terrible I mean the motor does not sound happy. It may be so rich because the cooling is insufficient and if run up to normal rpms it will build too much heat like the OP says.

The other issue you have is that little nitro motors don't have the reliability of the bigger workhorse gas engines. Its a cool project and nice efforts to make it run on gas

I dont know about good for scale.
the scale guys are going predominantly electric because of the sound, the high pitched gear noise is key... no one likes a scale apache AH64 to sound like a cheap used Ryobi weedeater.

he did a great job of getting it to work... but there are alot of things out there that tinkerers have made work, the key to success though is performance and durability. I have yet to see either when it comes to these 10-15cc homemade gassers.

but he is having fun...and AFAIK, thats the whole point.

it is through small steps like this and this kind of mindset that add knowledge to the hobby right? maybe this isnt the optinal application for this, but maybe open the door to something else, so def wouldnt knock on it.

Add a water pump run from a belt and a small radiator and get it the cooling it needs. Maybe then you can lean it out and get it running at higher RPMs. Good job!

I'm glad you like it,, know what I am thinking, how about a 120 2St glow converted for a plane (warbird)

Conversions always have issues with insufficient cooling, tuning problems trying to make a glow carb work on gas (the taper on a glow needle is too coarse for gas fine tuning) and needing a lot of oil because of the lack of needle bearings on the conrod.

Water cooling is not the easy fix it sounds like, as the size of the radiator you need is a lot bigger than you think.

No need to convert a 1.20 2 stroke to gas for a plane, there are dozens of high quality 20cc to 30cc dedicated gas engines that have walbro carbs and full bearing cranks that work really well and will drop into most quarter scale planes.

G26, DLE-20, DLE-30RA, DA-35, O.S. GT22 and GT33, and so on.

I like the effort and they have it flying consistently. Great job !

Gaui has a gas engine for the NX4 that a .37 is the normal engine. The gas engine is .50 size, so maybe the engine in the video would be benefit from a displacement increase.

I made a mistake once, but I was wrong?

if you saw the 2nd video I posted, all you need is an Evolution Gasser Carb, and a 90, 105 or 120 Heli glow engine and of course the Ignition, and off you go,

I have been wondering about those Carbs for a couple years now

sorry but it's not me, I just found the video strolling around RCU

something you have to note in the video is the size of the prop, my God it looks longer than 12 inches to me, so it must be a pitch of 4, even if it's a 12 incher

small conversions like this usually dont live very long... not recommended, look at the whole GT15cc story and you'll quickly understand the risks associated with tiny nitro to gasoline conversions dealing with over heating, bearing wear, oil requirements and to some extent tuning issues.

showing a preference will only get you into trouble, 90% of everything is crap...
