So I go to the field this afternoon to meet Ansy and test fly his 30cc Cap that we worked on the day before. No room in the bed of my truck to put helis, I decided to take the whiplash as I haven't flown it in a while in the front seat so I can have some flights while waiting for him to show up.
I get there, gas up the heli and put it at the end of my flight station, turn it on and nothing. Huh? No gas tank light, no voltmagic lights, nothing. Damn, the battery is dead, what the heck?? I don't have anything else to fly and I'm waiting on Ansy, so I decided to start it up and see if I get power from the generator.
I pull it a couple of times and the engine comes to life, and then I see the voltmagic doing its initializing light sequence, and next thing you know the Demon is initialized and ready with an orange light. The voltmagic is blinking red lowest LED. I turn the battery switch off to see if in fact its working and as I expected the power from the generator goes to full green on the voltmagic as there isn't a load on it any more. I turn the switch back on and see the LED dropping back 1 LED at a time.
Since everything was initialized I step back and let it sit there charging the battery. After about a minute it goes from last red LED to next one up orange, with red LED still blinking peak low voltage alert. I spooled up the heli some and I see the orange LED move up to the next one, green, this one is 6.2v. (last red one is 6v or below). So I'm not comfortable to fly so I just sit there and wait around on the back of the truck, then I decide to bring it up to 0 pitch, and the governor kicks in and she's at flight rpms. I quickly see the voltmagic LEDs rise to the next green LED one after another, from 6.2 to 6.3 to 6.4 to 6.5 to 6.6 and finally its at 6.7v first green LED and the red peak low voltage the other side is still blinking. I think I'll wait.
A couple more minutes go by then I pick it up into a hover, fly it to the center of the runway and land again. Wait maybe a minute more then I decide to shut it down and reinitialize everything (didn't like initializing while the engine is running though the demon is working perfectly ok). I turn the motor off, and soon after I see the LED drop to 6.6v, then 6.5v. I turn it off, turn it back on, and it goes up to somewhere around 6.3v and I start the engine.
Go back to the truck and I decide to take off. Now I'm flying around low passes back and forth looking at the voltmagic with every pass like a hawk and it was always pegged full green 1st LED at 6.7v (or higher), but still with the last red peak low voltage LED blinking. I was not comfortable to shoot any autos so I flew around the entire 15 minutes doing some circuits and flips, rolls, 3d stuff.
After the end of that tank, I land, shut it off and refuel. Turn the receiver back on and the voltmagic comes up to 6.4v and holds there the whole time I walk my heli from the truck to the takeoff spot and pull start the engine. At soon as I start the engine the voltmagic goes full green to 6.7v+ and I walk back to the truck, spool up and take off for flight #2.
Now with no more a blinking red LED 1 and a good 15 minutes charge on the battery and showing that its holding some power, I decided I was OK and just flew normally including several autos.
After that flight, refueled for the 3rd flight and this time the battery held 6.5v the whole time I walked the heli out to the takeoff spot and until I started the engine, at which point it jumped back up to 6.7v+.
I texted Jeremy about this and his reply was "Wow that's ballsy"
Well this is not the first time this happened to me, many years back I forgot the 1005 power switch on and got to the field with a dead battery, did the same thing and flew 4 flights, with the first being an easy continuous "charging flight". I replied to Jeremy, confidence in the product!
I'm not sure why that battery died like that, I guess I need to replace it soon - I will charge it at home now and see what it puts out. It is original with the helicopter, 4 years 6+weeks old and 1262 flights on it, so maybe its well spent and time for a new one.
