You can use glow sticks on the skids, but glow sticks only on the skids are not enough for visibility according to AMA regs.

"RC night flying requires a lighting system providing the pilot with a clear view of the model’s attitude and orientation at all times. Hand-held illumination
systems are inadequate for night flying operations. "

This does not indicate glow sticks are inadequate according to AMA

Gary,

We are expecting more specific rules from the AMA Safety Committee sometime this month. As soon as we get clarification on specific concerns we will post them here.

Why make any ruling that's language will complicate, deter, exclude or dissatisfiy?

I understand rules are important for safety but Pilots are flying expensive equipment and for most of us we don't want to crash said equipment.

Why not just cover the whole field by saying, all night flight helis need to be elluminated by a non external light sorce visible from any orientation and securely attached to the model?

Don't be specific on what must be used.

Light Towers

Speaking of those, how about IRCHA rent several light towers for all of us and put them somewhere on AMA property behind a flight line so we can if we like fly under the lights at night. Maybe where they hold the AMA nats would be a good spot, say that flight line there with say 4 light towers facing away from site 4 so it doesn't interfere with night operations there.

That would be a nice welcome addition to the festivities. Please consider and thank you!

Raja,

There are two components to light towers.

First whether the AMA safety committee would even approve of light towers. I have contacted them in order to see if this would even receive official approval. The problem is still the external illumination clause in the safety code. If they say it is an approved activity I will pass along the information.

Second, the cost of light towers. I checked with suppliers in Muncie, and they would not be cheap. We would need two of them, because you have to have a backup system-no way for approval on just one unit. I have checked and the cost would be little over 700.00 for the week. It makes no sense to just rent them per day as the cost is 150 each per day (300 per day).

Rappy, where did you see no DIY night blades? To me, having reread the 1st post several times, I didn't see anything about excluding any type of blade. Andy

Inverted IS more fun!

DIY night blades are allowed. It is up to the assembling pilot to make sure they are flight worthy.

A dollar a pilot?

How many pilots show up, around $1000 right? So if IRCHA doesn't have enough funds to cover the light towers and they are approved (as we already do them at several funflys) how about we charge each pilot $1 extra to cover them? I'd be in for that.

If you get them please get them delivered Saturday before until Saturday last day of the event as that night its fireworks time and we don't need them and Sunday is a go home day.

Thank you for the consideration!!

Raja,

The first thing we have to find out is if the AMA will approve of light towers.

If they do approve, then the next item will be to figure out the additional funding. I don't think a blanket fee would be best, but maybe an optional fee people could pay when registering. Then if there is truly enough interest the money would be available. Next we will need get a list of people who will volunteer and accept responsibility to run them and lock everything down each evening. We would probably need 2 volunteers every evening from 9-11 as they could not be there unmanned with no one to ensure safety.

In the end, we can't even begin to try and plan until we get word from AMA. I have been told there is a safety committee meeting at the end of the week, so we should hear something at the beginning of next week.

Light Towers Approved

We have had an update concerning Night Flying. We have received approval for Light Tower flying at the Jamboree from the AMA. There will be a few requirements: Two light towers are required. There will also be a requirement of glow sticks on skids and tail fin.

Here is what is needed by the IRCHA staff:

1. a Volunteer group that will take responsibility for running the light towers each night and turning off and locking them down. We are a small staff and tired by the time dark rolls around. These volunteers will also be responsible for flight line safety during Light Tower flying.

2. The cost for two light towers for the week will be 1000.00. They are 150.00 each per day so the week rate is the better deal. This is not a budgeted item for this year so there will have to be external funding. We can create a go fund me, or create an optional registration fee.

Some of us think the actual number of participants for Light Tower flying is much smaller than the total number of people who are willing to pay for the cost of towers. A go fund me, or required fee would help us to determine if this is something that should be budgeted for next year.

We have approval, the ball is now in the court of the people who want to fly under Light Towers.

*Before you ask, AMA specifically said that hand held Spot Lighting is prohibited by the AMA Safety Code.

Betty,

There will be somewhere around 700+ pilots. There are also many spectators that come for the event that are not registered as pilots.
