Hey, I've recently stepped up to collective pitch flying and have a Tarot 450pro and a Align TRex 550. I've crashed the 550 by making a dumb mistake and getting a little too far away and loosing orientation. I rebuilt the heli, did all my checks on the bench and installed blades just to go outside and spool up the heli and a swash link popped off and the heli rolled over and totaled itself out again. So you can imagine my disappointment. So I rebuilt again and after all tests again I was able to spool it up, fly it around the yard a bit and land with no issues. I took it out again the next day and when I plugged the battery up I heard a loud pop and now nothing works. What the heck happened? It acts like the esc has gone bad. Is this common? Is there a way to prevent it again?
I am running a Castle Talon 90 ESC and Skookum SK540 Gyro.

Do you see the lights on the ESC? Do you hear the arming tones when you plug in the batt? Does your Rx light up from the BEC input from the ESC?

It sounds something went wrong after the first crash that didn't show its self until now. Get another esc, make sure the polarity is correct and go from there.

Maybe the ESC popped a cap?

Yes: What D and Don said. Cap likely shorted to ground and that's that. Polarity is also an issue. You can check the ESC again with a known good pack but if a cap blew you'd be able to smell it as well. If you do smell it and it's highly likely; don't plug in the batt. Also if that did occur it's likely you cooked the Rx and possibly the servos. Ish happens. Regroup and go again.

Thanks guys, I do get a little smell from esc. I connected a flight battery to gyro and all else seems to be okay. I've got a new esc coming. According to manual it says this talon 90 is preset to an align heli. Aside from polarity do I need to do anything else? I bought this setup used so I'm not sure of the setup.

When you get the new ESC you'll need to calibrate the throttle and do the basic settings. It's easiest with the castle link if you're getting the same ESC.

When you say "setup used". Are you talking about the helicopter, or just the ESC?

Thanks, yeah I'm going back with the same esc. I was referring to just the esc on setup used but I bought the whole heli rtf with remote and all so I am using someone else's setup. I've been in communication with the guy I bought it from and he has helped me with everything else he just couldn't remember what was done on esc. I've got the program card and adapter so it shouldn't be a problem.

Ok I've set up esc but having trouble setting endpoints. I can't get any tone when going through the steps I've watched on YouTube. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong. I went into radio and changed high and low settings to 30, plugged up battery and can change setting all the way to 140 and never get a tone. The initial settings were 114 before I started monkeying with it.

Before you plug in any thing again, check all connections and wires for any kind of damage and make sure you have pluged everything in correctly or you may destroy more electronics. Then check all of your machinical links and that its not damaged.
Nothing worse than a crash caused by a preivous crash.....

Make sure you dont have any throttle curves in when you try to set it up.....make it a straight line from low throttle to high throttle

Thanks, I did check everything prior to and the only used parts now are the tail gear cage and landing skids (haha, seriously). Anyway I figured it out, previous owner had governor setup so I had to go back into esc setup and change to governor mode and played with values and got it back going. I was able to get a couple guys to help me make some other adjustments, so it's better now than it was before. Test flight was a success and it's safe back at the house. GOOD DAY!
