I'm looking at buying a new radio (see photo). I do not have a fleet of helys at this time...of course I hope to some day. I'm leaning to this JRXG8. I want to switch over from my Futaba7C. I am a sport flyer now but starting to do some 3d. I fly an Align 600EFL Pro now (BeastX on board) and will probably get a Synergy E7 (as my 2nd bird) and go with a Vbar for that one.

With all that said, here are my questions;

What would be the reason to go any higher in channels or get a better radio than the one I'm looking at? and let me narrow that question down further by saying..."Based on what I fly and how I fly".

I appreciate your time in advance for replys-Thank you

Oh I forgot to ask also, what do you think about getting that radio from Hobby King? They now have a USA warehouse. Everybody else is selling it for $414.00....or more. I want to make sure I get good service on it if anything happens with it.

Get it from them and I am pretty sure your service is out the window with anyone else unless they will handle it. And I wouldn't be betting on service from them. I would pay the little more and get it from Jr Americas. Either that or just go with the hope nothing happens which is a pretty safe bet anyway. Either way will work

Thats what i was thinking as far as hobby king goes. Would feel more secure with someone in the US.

No comments on the channels or suggestions of the added benefits of getting a higher end radio? Im surprised nobody has chimed in. I havent used telemetry yet or life batteries.

What might I like on the 11 verses what the 8 doesnt have?

Radios are like cars. A Toyota Yaris, Mazda 2, Ford Fiesta will get you down the road. Buy what you want. It's a hobby.

Ok I looked this closer. First off this reciever that they are sending with it is not xbus. It will work but you are gonna have to run wires for each channel. You want to be sure and read close what they are selling. You want a reciever with a bx behind it. That one does not.meaning it is not xbus. With Hobby King you have to be real careful about what you are buying. By the time you buy that and spend another 80 bucks for a receiver you have now spent more unless you don't care about all the wires.

As far as getting a higher end radio the differences are 14xg. Better gimbals and more channels. As far as needing it not necessary but is nice. That part just depended on what you want. As far as capabilities goes both are programmed the same just difference in channels. Just depends on what you want

As far as ppl not chiming in? We unfortunately it has come to this as most of us get tired of getting blasted by ppl for helping and being honest about things when it don't agree with it being like they want. That is why you not very often see the top tier of pilots posting on here. I have seen ppl tell the best in the world they don't know what they are talking about or they are wrong. It gets old quick. That is why I usually pm ppl anymore

Although the number of channels roughly correlates to the price within a brand, that is not the reason to buy a more expensive transmitter. It is just marketing. Most people use rudder, elevator, aileron, throttle, pitch. And a channel or two for this or that. It would be difficult to find a non-scale helicopter that uses more than 8 channels.

As LaDon said, the XG 14 has excellent sticks/gimbals. Well worth the extra price for me. The extra channels don't hurt anything. You may want a huge color touch screen. You may want a talking transmitter.

I always disagree with name brand pilots when the don't know what they are talking about. Some are excellent sources - Dr.Ben, Gary Wright, etc. Terry Moore is an excellent source of information for bearings, materials and such.

For decades I bought the best of the best. Now I buy good enough. You could win the World Championship with an XG14. It's the sticks.

I am not responding to this thread just to be responding, but I want to give you another perspective, at least from my point of view.

First, I agree with everything LaDon has said. Make sure that you know that you expect from your equipment and from whom you purchase it.

My view that I want to add is one that I have gained in over 45 years in this hobby. So many, many times I have seen hobbyist try to do it as inexpensively as they can, and honestly, I have not ever seen one be successful in the long run. You will hear everyone debate on the number of channels you will need as a minimum, and that was answered earlier. I want to point out that hobbyist interests change over time (mine included). All you foresee you will need today, might change as your interests do. So keep that in mind as you decide on what to get.

One thing you will definitely see is that as technology improves, platforms that were the top of the line a couple years ago, have been superseded and are not the cat's meow today. Does that still mean they don't work. No, it doesn't, but what it can mean is that you won't be able to get replacements for your items as new stuff becomes mainstream.

I started when this hobby was strictly on the 27mhz CB band. Then came 72MHZ followed shortly by narrow banding on the 72 band. Then came PCM, then 2.4ghz, then DSM, DSM2, DSMX, and now Xbus/Sbus. My old Futaba 9VAP PCM radio still works just as well as it did 30 years ago, but it's been a long time since you could get any parts for it.

So, just keep in mind that your interests might drive you into a change of direction and need for different equipment, as well as a change in equipment technology. As a sport flyer, I don't know how much you can actually see in the difference in gimbals; I know they are quantitatively measurable, but can the average pilot really feel and see the difference?

I agree that you should spend what is necessary to get good equipment, and your choice in channels should be at least 9, and higher if you have the means and any kind of ideas of doing something scale, or scratch built multi rotor camera platform.

Hope this helps.

why more channels ?
7 is good for a governor, 8 is great for fbl banking, 9 for fpv, 10 + for air planes and scale.

spending time, paying attention
