Wow, the weather forecast is still gloomy. If there is a rainout, would this be rescheduled? It looks like the bad weather from the plains will make its way east.

Is there a schedule posted anywhere, even just a tentative list? I love that F3N will be added, but I hoped to get an idea of the day by now. Since this will be an important F3C event, I just wanted to see how F3N would line up. Hope I'm not being difficult, but it is a pretty far drive and now I'm working Friday night and Sunday morning, so just wanted to have a heads up. If things do not work out for me to get there I wish every one the best of luck!!!

Synergy333,

Basically, Friday is a practice/hangout day. No actual rounds of the contest are flown, but since this is the first F3C (of new maneuvers) and the first USA F3N contest, Friday likely be will the "work out the bugs" day. Naturally everyone has their own interpretation of the rules/maneuvers and Friday at this type of event is hands down the best way to see how everyone is doing them and working together so that every pilot can be successful during the rounds. Numerous times I've shown up never flying the maneuvers before and with the help of all the FAI pilots (F3C AND F3N now) got things straightened out enough to at least not get zeros on the maneuvers.

Saturday is contest round day...things move fast as it is peer judging so basically there is no delay between flights or rounds. I am not sure Daniel's plan but I would assume getting at least 75% of the rounds in is the idea as a lot of the guys have a long drive home on Sunday.

Sunday if there is any rounds left to fly (usually 1 from my experience) that is taken care of and a small awards/see ya presentation and everyone is on their way home.

Regarding where F3N fits in...I believe it is just as important as F3C and the rounds will be flown in sequence with the flight order rotation of F3C:

Round 1:
AMA Class 1, 2, 3, F3C P, F3N Sets
Round 2:
Class 1, 2, 3, F3C P, F3N Music
...
etc. etc.

Essentially you'll be flying all day in an orderly flight plan...

Nick

Schedule

I concur! Thanks Nick, good description.

Again, schedule is notional since we can only manage one flight line with contestant judging. We get what we can get depending on entries and weather. But both are looking good as of today!

Synergy333,

If you can make it Saturday, I think it's worth coming. You should get at least 3-4 rounds of flying in. And if there's any down time (unlikely once rounds begin, but field is open before and after rounds) we allow quick test/practice flights if you want to sort through some things.

Since this is the first contest of the year with new F3C maneuvers I suspect we will all be "sorting through some things"

Now I know why I had a weird feeling about this weeekend. My heli just went down. I was able to bring it down safely with an emergency spinning auto. I will only need a part or 2 to get back in the air. But I won't have the parts until Monday at the earliest. Funny that something as small as a bevel gear pin can ground you. Tough to see in that particular area during preflight checks. Glad the heli is ok, but that will be a couple of days practice I lose. Guess it's fine because o changed a couple of things in my music routine so I will spend the weekend working on that.

Contest Wrap Up Report

Another great Huntsville Heli Flyers Championships this weekend!

Thanks to those who made the trip and participated flying, judging, and spectating. Special thanks to the Huntsville Heli Flyers club for allowing me to host this event again this year; 6th annual. We have one of the best fields/clubs in the country to host helicopter events, hands down. Big thanks to Don Miller (resident Huntsville expert judge) and Dave Sellars (multiple US World Championship seated judge for F3C) and Gordie Meade (US Team supporter and caller extraordinaire) for sitting in during all rounds offering consistent critique. Thanks to all!

I've said this before, but the "die hard regulars" make this a great event. Beginners make new friends with seasoned veterans and gain valuable tips to improve their flying through the rest of the season. I challenge anyone interested in contest flying to attend these local events. We have way too much fun. I hope to see you all in Nashville for the next event and at the Nats later this summer! Practice, practice...

The weather held for practice on Friday (rain only in the evening hours). We flew 3 rounds on Saturday in sunny skies and all enjoyed a great dinner out on the patio of a local craft brewery. Sunday was another beautiful Tennessee Valley Spring day spent wrapping up the event with a final round before parting ways. Wind was a challenge today, but all managed the conditions very well. Personal note, the new F-schedule F3C maneuvers are a handful, I think most will agree! Looking forward to perfecting them for the Team Trials.

I'd also like to highlight we spent a good bit of time at this event discussing the criteria to judge F3N. We all agree this could be an emerging discipline in contest flying here in the US, but we need more participants!!! Devin Hammond and Nick Maxwell gave us a great display of Set Maneuvers and Freestyle components, with and without music. Judges will be studying hard after this weekend in preparation for the Team Trials to be held at the Nationals prior to IRCHA.

Results are as follows:

AMA Sportsman
1st Place
Dan B (first time contest participant!)

AMA Expert
1st Place
3000pts Dennis Purduski (2015 USA Team Manager)
2nd Place
1521pts Charles Anderson (IRCHA board member)

FAI F3C
1st Place
1985pts Nick Maxwell (3 time Team USA member)
2nd Place
1815pts Cliff Hiatt (former World Champion!)
3rd Place
1611pts Tim Diperi (2011 USA Team Manager)
4th Place
1610pts Daniel Hiatt (2 time Team USA member)
5th Place
783pts Gordie Meade (see above)

FAI F3N
1st Place
Devin Hammond (Inaugural US F3N contest champion!)

Great seeing everyone this weekend. I wish you all safe travels home. See you in a few weeks in Nashville! Practice, practice...

Daniel
