Working on the skid extensions. Made the first set from 1mm styrene and they came out nice, except too brittle and fragile. Ended up using one as a template and milled new ones from aluminum. Once cleaned up, they should look allright.

Spent a day off in the paint hood. Finished the landing gear with extensions and most of the "disco ball" (flir). A bit of trial and error with paint. Used rattle can for gear, first stuff would not dry even after 5 days. Stripped off and used a flat ultracover. It doesnt look great when applied, but flattens out as it dry's. The small parts I broke the airbrush out for.

You're having too much fun. Stop and put it away.

Project is really looking good. I'll take a set of the landing gear clamps.

Soldered up the rear skid, soft copper tube over steel piano wire to get the right diameter and for rigidity. The triandle step from basswood and its mounts started from fine scale modela tube step mounts that i cut up and used styrene to form the step angle. It took awhile and alotta primer to get the step shaped perfect, but patience prevailed. Still gotta touch up the mounting bolts with the airbrush.

Gear pretty much finished, except for some touch up paint on the bracket bolts. Have I said before how much I like the micro-fasteners micro hex bolts...I think I have!

Tail skid and antennae mount. I was given some plastic board from a friend who makes signs. Its pretty lightweight and mills pretty well without melting. Used a couple coats of primer and it comes out good. I think its a little heavier than balsa, but lighter than ply. Some pics also of the bottom. The vent is from styrene, the access covers from fine scale modela. Will add the attachment screws after painting. Gettin close to the dreaded rivet stage!

Doing everything I can to procrastinate doin my rivets. I have the fine scale modela sliding door kit that i got working pretty well, but some of the hardware looked flimsy, so time to make them outta aluminum. Made a jig outta mahogany to shape the pieces in a press.
Just have to finish shape them.

Finished the sliding door hardware and trial mounted the doors. They work pretty good, bind a little, but should loosen up with use. I also made the pitot tubes from aluminum. Still working on the pitot assembly, but real happy with them so far.

Finished the pitots, except for some screw detail. Shaped balsa and styrene, reinforced with carbon fiber rods. The pitot tubes are 2 sizes of thickwall tubing, turned down and steel wooled. Did a little trial run of rivets on the tail with canopy glue, we'll see how it looks when dry.

Thanks Taylor. Getting close to paint stage, anyone know where I can get FS34031 "helo drab" in enamel to shoot with my hvlp gun?
The research I did suggested this would be my closest match to a US army heli color. I was looking at Klass Kote, but its tough to see if they have a color close to it. I've never used their product, but I've heard it's quality.

Klass Kote is good paint I used it on my Cobra, just follow the directions and you should have good success.

Gary, thanks for the klass kote endorsement, the cobra's looking great! I'm currently in rivet purgatory, spent last couple days dotting everything I can. My eyes are starting to get a little wonky! Finally came to the realization that ya just can't make it perfect. There are so many rivet lines, this thing would be one big glue ball if I did them all, and I would be about 10 years older! I'm still doin alot more than these pics, but "keepin it real".

Getting close to paint, however every time I look at pics, I see something else I can rivet or make. Finished the gear brackets, the thru bolts don't go thru, I figured in a hard landing they might crack the fuse. The gear is spaced off the mount for flex and tied to the heli into the woodwork inside per the stock mounting. Still looking for a source of helo drab paint, but more quantity than the model masters half ounce!

We're gettin serious now! Done with most of the paint. I agonized over what to use and really wanted to spray gun it. I tried some samples of spray can camo and was pretty happy with the krylon fusion olive drab. It was pretty close to some pics I had and contrasted well with the flat black parts. Unfortunately life and time made me go the spray can route, but ok with it. The paint sprayed super easy, flattened really well and near impossible to get a run or sag. So the BIG question is do I clear coat. Krylon makes a clear matte and flat, so PLEASE chime in! My I phone makes the color a little lighter in the pics, its actually a shade darker.

Looks good Adam! The clear coat would help protect the color from hanger rash events.

ALWAYS,ALWAYS,ALWAYS...check the lot numbers on the cans!!! The fuse came out very nice, but is a distinct shade different than the rest of the parts. Now I've got to wait a week to give everything a light coat to match! Lesson learned!
