If you think you can kick back and hand this to the AMA and get a reversal, you are wrong. Have a look at the discussions on the AMA Facebook. Note that every question regarding this is either ignored or if AMA decides to answer, they give the toe-the-line FAA answer.

From the AMA facebook:

The question:
Kiyomi Yama****a: Why aren't you taking legal action against the FAA over this? If the FAA has exceeded their Congressionally mandated authority, that's grounds to take them to court!

5 · December 14 at 11:08pm
Response:
Academy of Model Aeronautics: We do understand your concern and disappointment with the FAA requiring registration. And, although this may seem like regulation, it is actually simply a registration process. For many years, the AMA has been working with the FAA and government officials at the federal, state, and local levels to keep regulation out of the hobby. It's not over, and this is an evolving process.
"although this may seem like regulation, it is actually simply a registration process." That's crazy. That response might as well have been the FAA talking. They appear to have rolled over.

Have a look. https://www.facebook.com/modelaviation

IT IS UP TO YOU, AT THE INDIVIDUAL LEVEL TO APPEAL TO OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENTS.

Get involved!

Aaron,

Whats with the one man vendetta against AMA?

They have been fighting it. If not for them sec. 336 would not even exist and we would have no leg to stand on to even start litigating this. They have been lobbying for over a year and have lawyers working on this but look at the other players... DJI, google Amazon. Organizations with literally billions available to spend on lobbying if they so choose.

We are just outgunned.

I just got an email from my district VP telling us that the EC is meeting at the expo in January to work on the plan to keep fighting for a hobbyist exemption.

If large numbers of the membership protest and go rogue its only going to make their job harder and I fear just give the impression that we are a bunch of rogues. Exactly what we don't want right now.

Guys. You misunderstand me. I'm not saying appeal or blast the AMA with whining or ragequits. I'm saying that on this subject, we need to act.

If u don't care about getting a reversal, fine. What you choose to do is your choice. I'm simply showing those who think they can kick back and AMA is on it that they are wrong. If you're concerned, you need to take individual action.

The op says "if you want to reverse this" There are opinion threads on the issue. This is a thread about action. If you don't care to reverse it, why bother posting here? Easy target I guess. Which is really low rent.

I'm trying to be constructive. You may personally not care, but look around. Others care. And they are confused. People are talking in other threads about not complying. Or doing rash overtures of defiance. Things that are ultimately self destructive and will not change anything. This is the ONE constructive thing we can do.

Well guys. You're on your own. I counted the number of folks who explicitly stated they support this. Six. And much more opposition to this idea. I'm not one to rock the boat that hard. Not for six signatures on a petition.
SO, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. If you supported this idea, great, now go get on the phone with your local representative and bark. I'm not going to lead a charge against the will of many of my fellow modelers. Not for six signatures on a petition. I'd be out of my mind.
I petitioned my rep as an individual already. Now it's your turn.
I guess I thought people would see it my way. Some do. Many don't.
SO, AGAIN, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. No one's coming to the rescue, guys. Get on the phone.
Over and out.

I closed that thread only because I'm done trying to start an unpopular petition. Doesn't mean I am giving up on the idea that concerned people need to know they should act individually.

Fwiw..

As I thought...
The gist of that well written opinion is that the fAA does want to circumvent existing law based on unvetted information, and is willing to parse "is" to do it.
A pox on the government.

Total malarkey....LMAO

You should try to re-educate yourself with regards to the US Constitution...rather than obtaining such BS talking points from your District VP that knows absolutely nothing about LAW.

No, Aaron you are not trying to be constructive. A decision has been made that you don't like.

It has very little cost or disturbance to you or your hobby, yet you are out railing against it... slippery slope... etc., etc., ad nausea. Bring down the AMA, march on Washington. Kiss the babies.

Just accept it, and put it behind you. It is a cost of doing business/pleasure. Seen any wind mills around here?

Aaron,

Got your PM - but I will reply here so other can get some value form it too.

I understand you are upset, but I'm arguing against this because even if you have not explicitly called for it, threads like this one and the petition thread are inciting people to quit AMA and go rogue. Doing that, and doing it publicly on a forum, is only playing into the image of us as a bunch of dangerous threats to society they want to paint us with.

For a good read on how another group handled a similar situation (The high power rocketry guys dealing with ATF who wanted to label rockets as bombs) see this:

http://www.helifreak.com/showpost.p...6&postcount=433

I feel we need to work with AMA and their lawyers and let the process play out. If AMA as an organization of 150k with a couple million dollars for lobbying is outgunned (and they are next to Amazon), then what chance do any of us have individually?

" And, although this may seem like regulation, it is actually simply a registration process."

If it's not regulation then why is enforcement necessary?

It is regulation, an enforced requirement that you must comply with and penalties for non compliance.

In most all organizations that I can think of, registration is just one of the rules of the regulations (or rules).

But don't worry, I am sure the "rules" will follow.

Jharkin. Thanks for that. For the record, I'm not quitting AMA and don't recommend that anyone else does either. It's just a leadership issue not an organizational one. Taking toys and going home isn't the answer.

I'm not telling people to go rogue and in fact have preached restraint in the more extreme threads that are calling for such roguery. Threads that call for defiance and rash action. Threads that I notice you're absent from, btw. Why single my position out?

But. That's not the point.

Here's the point:

You can call your congressman AND stay in the AMA. If congress can't reverse it, then we'll capitulate. But don't just roll over without challenging it. That's my advocacy. There's too much passivity in our ranks.

OK it looks like Jim Tiller AMA has weighed in with a statement.

Good news. However, doesn't change the need for individual action with local congress. Read his letter. Even he called for individuals to contact their representatives.

It is not rogue to call your congressman. AMA is asking for us to do it. Make the call.

Sweet relief! More AMA leadership and communication:

http://view.exacttarget.com/?j=fe4f...0017a721171&r=0][/url]

Note the AMA is calling for us to delay registration for as long as legally possible. That gives us until Feb 19.

Additionally, they are looking for us to comment on the FAA site

So - if you want to help, hold off on registering, and comment to the FAA!

And don't forget, we were still called upon to contact local congress reps.

Stay involved. Notice AMA is telling us as individuals to move on this. They wouldn't be saying this if they didn't need numbers to add to their clout. They need YOU to act. Passivity is not an option.
