Well I was using my icharger 308duo yeasterday and decided to update the firmware. I read the manual and followed the directions for downloading and connecting to my PC. I connected a USB cable to my desktop, powered up the 308DUO and connected the USB to it. Here is where it goes bad...my PC shuts down. So I unplug the cable and hit the power button on the PC, it begins at the safe mode screen and I hit enter to start up and it shuts off again. It seems that there is a major issue with the icharger causing a ground loop when connected to AC power and to a PC. THE ICHARGER FRIED MY MOTHERBOARD. I went to Progressive RC and find a youtube video that they have posted and the guy says "oh make sure that you use a battery to power the charger or a laptop on battery to avoid a ground loop issue" WTF??!! There is no warning anywhere on the website or manual about this. I sent Junsi a PM but so far no response. I am basically stuck now with a damaged motherboard and a dead PC for a BS firmware update. Now I have to buy a new processor and mobo combo due to the age of my PC.
I can only assume that the update procedure is the same for the 4010 DUO. Be careful.

LOL. Yeah it is 5 years old and due for a new processor BUT did not want to spend the money now. They need to have a very clear warning about the ground loop. Basically it looks like I sent 24V right to my mobo.

Charger

This news is worthy of being a sticky in the charger forum.

If I'm not mistaken, the iCharger comes with a special non-standard USB cable w/o a ground to prevent this from happening. However, it's way easy to mistake that cable for any other standard USB cable. Certainly a poor design and an expensive lesson learned.

Some Hyperion users have had similar ground loop issues. Some had good luck using a third party optical isolator device.

Revolectrix eliminated the problem by incorporating an optically isolated USB interface into their product.

I have read the instructions and did not see any mention of a special usb cable or a note to update the charger powered by a battery or use a laptop powered by a battery.

Progressive RC said this was only an issue on the older chargers not the 308 duo. I did the update using my laptop running on the battery.

Well Junsi sent me an email stating that the usb issue is well know and its not their problem. Told me to "have a nice day". Great customer service. Pretty lame.

Hello Jordan,

We are sorry to hear that. It is known that our USB is not the isolated USB, you can not say it is our responsibility for this issue. And you know that the USB of computer is also not isolated.

Have a nice day!

Hello Jordan,

It is not our products' design problem, but the using problem.

Hope you can understand. Thanks.

Funny I did not know about that problem until I read the post. How many others don't know about this problem.

so, if i don't have an isolated usb cable, can i use a standard one since i have both the icharger and the pc connected to batteries during the software update?
thanks.

Either one on a battery will eliminate the common AC ground. I don't remember the details but my Hyperion charger had connection problems as well. Taking one out of the common AC circuit fixed that.

Always use my portable power box when updating my hyperion charger.
There is a Good chance to fried everything.

Back on this days, I fried a TV LCD by connecting HDMI cables with my pc.

We found problems on electrical wiring on my house and poor circuitry on one of my surge protector.

I fixed that surge protector...with a hammer. Period.
