How about a flybar only 3D competition? Lets see the pros do all those fancy moves with a flybarred heli!

60% of the time, it works every time!

Honestly when flipping and tumbling is involved, the FB vs. FBL makes little difference. I think where FB is hard is in tracking. So large maneuvers...

We used to mix the helis to fly straight much like what the fbl controllers do now.

I think a cool competition @ IRCHA would be something like this... 6 or 8 identical helis, maybe supplied by a group of manufacturers. Same engine/pipe & fuel if nitro OR same motor, ESC & batts if electric. All FB with same paddles, servos & tail gyro.
Each pilot OR team gets an hour to set-up the heli, then they get 2 flights, 1 with set maneuvers all pilots gotta fly, then a cut-loose Smack-Down free flight.
Couple guys to judge OR some judges & other pilots combined to decide winner.
This would highlight the pilots skills more than the heli setup...

Kind of like the 'King of the Mountain' contests that went on @ ski resorts.. Same Dual race course, but each racer had to race in a group on skis as 1/2 their score, then race in a group on snowboards as the other 1/2.. Best combined time was winner.

Maybe make it a Charity Event thing, with a trophy tagged with winner's name OR team name each year -PLUS Bragging Rights

There are a few contests like that 3dm, xfc. They all used to fly mechanical setup flybarred heads with OS 90s on them. 2009 and 2010 were the big years of change from what I remember. Even though I was on the plane side of things .

The only thing you can choose is the flight controller, radio, and blades.
What is a flight controller?

I think this is a super idea. Call it a "Classic Heli" contest. Any machine from the flybar era allowed. Tail gyro only.

Come on don't be a bunch of pansies. Pro's supposedly can fly bricks in a windstorm.

HOW about nobar and use revomixing ???
Put it all in the radio and hands of pro's.

I know of a few that may decline

spending time, paying attention

Nobar and revomixing I love that. I think that FBL units in competition flying just doesn't make since. If your testing pilot skills why would you want auto pilot?
Once they let GPS to be used in the setup why do we need pilots? That's why heli pilot's are not attracted to drones.
Remember years back setting up a heli to fly like you liked. Changing flybars, blades, mixing arms and different weights to get things the way you liked.
It's like the best computer programmer has the best flying machine.
Kind of like a F-16 fly's better than a P-51 and that beats anything from WW-1 with two wings.

It's also like when they used electric power steering on Porche 911's and ruined the driving experience!

Nobar and revomixing on the tail would be good but maybe a bit boring for spectators. A flybar and a tail gyro allows much more extreme manoeuvres that would keep the crowd happy. "LOWER!"

Well not over 72 yet but I have been flying heli's for 37 years. You really have no idea how EZ it is to build and fly a new FBL heli. That change came at what seems like overnight.
I was a airplane pattern flyer and heli flyer. In competition the pilots skills are what's being scored. If the pilot has little to input to the flight why have a contest?
I know the new stuff fly's better is EZ to fly and build. I have a cellar full of them. I also have the knowledge and skills of the past, building and flying heli's that didn't even have gyros in them. Try that for fun!!!
I also get to have a opinion just like everyone. What it is based on can make a difference.

I love Logo's but Mikado is to blame with the Vbar! The tech geeks jumped all over it but I much prefer mechanical engineering.
