Actually, a majority of Americans are not obsessed with guns and shooting and do not find that funny at all.

----

But I digress. Back to the latest news article. If the FAA does ignore the recommendations and charge a fee it will be disappointing. We wont be the only ones upset, there where a lot of big retailers involved in those recommendations who will be pissed so legal challenges would probably be forthcoming.

I can only guess that the FAA thinks requiring retailers to process the registrations will ensure greater compliance than asking consumers to do it voluntarily... But there is so much out there already we know thats bound to fail.

Either way, that article is very light on detail or sources so I want to see more.

Formal Press Release is out

Interim final rule announcement is here:
https://www.faa.gov/news/press_rele...fm?newsId=19856

Summary:
* One number per pilot for hobby use. One number per UAV for commercial use.
* May self register via web or paper forms.
* Registration will be free for first 30 days of the program, and then a one time $5 fee per pilot thereafter.
* Registration must be renewed every 3 years at the above rates.

So for all of us we register free the first time, get a single number we have to put on all helis, and then have to renew for $5 every 3 years. Not too bad.

Not too bad? Not too bad??? Are you kidding me? Because stupid quadiots screwed everything for us? Did you see the part about the penalties? Criminal fines up to 250k? And 3 years of prison??? And that's not too bad?

If this was just for quads maybe it would not be that big a deal. But they are lumping basically all flying R/C systems. We heli fliers are just the tip of the iceberg. Fixed wing pilots outnumber us rotary wing fliers by a wide margin.

Might I suggest that we all write our Congressmen and Senators and express our extreme displeasure?

Oh and it states if you register within the first 30 days they will refund your $5...Not that it's just free. So give em your credit card #s guys!

So hypothetical here... What if you crash and a lipo goes up and burns away your registration #? Seems to me this is a fairly probable scenario. Do you get thrown in jail for 3 years. And fined 250k?

This is totally outrageous and brought down on us by quadiots. Instead of this crap, let's just ban quads outright and go back to the way things were. It's too bad the cats out of the bag now.. Now we're all hosed.

I saw a 50cc powered war-bird go down on an interstate on-ramp yesterday. Anything can happen to any type of aircraft.

This registration is not that onerous. Maybe the AMA can do away with placing AMA #s in aircraft now. We don't need both.

I can see it now . . . an FAA rep showing up at IRCHA and checking every pilot . . . and fineing all those that have not registered . . .

55 pounds ? That's the AMA guide line max.

Whatever happened to the law that exempts "hobby use" ? ?

SEC. 336. SPECIAL RULE FOR MODEL AIRCRAFT.
(a) IN GENERAL.—Notwithstanding any other provision of law
relating to the incorporation of unmanned aircraft systems into
Federal Aviation Administration plans and policies, including this
subtitle, the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration
may not promulgate any rule or regulation regarding a model

All those "We got your back" AMA magazines had us all passive, thinking everything was going to be alright. Had they been sounding the alarm the whole time, things may have turned out different. Imagine if they had been putting in their magazines, "Guys, we're in talks with the FAA, and it's not looking good. Everyone needs to petition their representatives, because we are going to lose this fight," things might have been different. But that's not what happened. They were constantly saying "We're on it, as your representatives. We got your back."

So, all throughout this period we remained passive. Thinking we had a lobbying organization that could do the job better than we could.

When AMA began posting drones on the cover of their magazine, few questioned why. Drone articles began to get more and more common. And, rather than protecting the LOS traditionalist base from the FPV sensation, they put out an FPV ruleset, codifying and embracing the trend. Then they released a refutation of a drone near miss report? I tried to say, "wait, just what's going on here?"

So will you now take notice that in the HELICOPTER SECTION of the latest AMA mag, is "HOW TO BUILD AN FPV RACER" QUAD article? This is in the RC HELICOPTER SECTION, gentlemen. That's the AMA definition of RC Helicopter, now?

Still think they have fidelity with their base?!?

I think they saw drone dollar signs. Let's not pretend the AMA was able to remain faithful and overlook the massive drone industry and the membership dues income they represent. They took their eye off the ball to chase this dream. The articles and communications in the magazines over the last couple years prove it. We were duped into remaining PASSIVE on this issue while the AMA blatantly embraced the drone trend.

Sorry, but what else explains ALL of what we've seen from the AMA in recency?

Oh and a dues increase and "sign up for a two year membership" just short of this ruling!? Ugh. What's up with that? Did they know?

I HATE BEING PLAYED FOR A FOOL AND I THINK IT HAPPENED.

PROVE ME WRONG.

Its going to take me all of 5 minutes, and no money, to fill out that form and spit out a few stickers from my dymo and stick them on the inside of my canopies.

Ok I lied. It will cost me 5 cents of dymo paper

So I wont face any penalty.

I dont really think its all necessary, but I cannot state with a straight face that its actaully going to take any effort or have an affect on my ability to fly legally. So why would I get all incenced over it????

If you want to get all mad just to get mad, have fun. Ive got much bigger problems to deal with in life.

They need to close down the Fun Fly Loophole. Did you know that you can go to a funfly and buy a helicopter, quad, airplane without even a simple background check?

Now that our hobby is on the govt radar, how soon will it be that the NHTSA, State DOT, whoever controls the nations waterways will start going after R/C car and R/C boats as well next.

If and only if cars or boats ever start causing problems. If idiots start trying to cross interstates with them, etc.

Unfortunately, the quad guys were stupid. The FAA didn't care about flying models until quads started making trouble.

We're just dolphins caught in a tuna net.
