I enjoy helis and drones. To say all drones are boring is a pretty hollow statement. If that's your opinion, fine. But for those of us that love flying and video/photography it's the ultimate hobby. If you don't enjoy the photo side of it I can see where a basic, line of sight drone might get a little dull. But there are many aspects to the hobby so don't be so quick to judge. If Alan enjoys drones/quads etc... it's good enough for me.

I fly them all, big and small. I fly planks, helis and MRs. Each has it's place in the hangar. Different tools for different jobs.

Hahahaa. Bunch of crotchedy old choads. Reminds me why I don't do the club thing. Everyone is miserable and hates everything that is different than what they have.

I was at a hobby shop actually looking at a short track racer, and a guy walked in with a drift car for repair. I asked him a few questions about ahort track buggies and then proceeded to tell him I fly helicopters, he quickley repiled... "oh yeah, right on, I fly drones too!"
I had to tell him, if you are at the controls , you're not flying a drone, drones fly autonomous.

Get The Wording Correct UAV or UAS

A friend of mine directed me to this forum, he's a heli pilot and I am not. I fly UAV's. I do not fly drones. For those who are scrambling to understand the abbreviation, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. Lets be clear, UAV's (Multi-Rotors} are a billion dollar business in today's dollars. Many of the movies and TV's shows you watch nightly use MR. I suggest those narrow minded individuals pay visit to FAA 333 Exemption website and look who all is applying to fly UAV's commercially.

I fly for fun currently, but I have applied for my FAA 333 to fly commercially. It is projected that one million UAV's will be under Christmas trees this year. There is more vendors, shops, manufacturing of UAV's then any other RC hobby. The world is exploding in the UAV industry in many uses of the UAV. I will end with a few links of my videos and how I use my UAV. I fly a HEXA UAV with 18 blades, camera mounted on a gimbal, video down link to a 10" display so that I can see where I fly. I have no use for a heli, but I am not going to be so closed minded to say anything negative of heli's. I have been in R/C for 46 years in nearly all phases.

I know they mean the same. I was going to include UAS then removed it. Until your post I forgot to remove it from the subject line...

this from the faa directly
Model aircraft operations are for hobby or recreational purposes only.

The FAA has partnered with several industry associations to promote Know Before You Fly, a campaign to educate the public about using unmanned aircraft safely and responsibly. Individuals flying for hobby or recreation are strongly encouraged to follow safety guidelines, which include:

* Fly below 400 feet and remain clear of surrounding obstacles
* Keep the aircraft within visual line of sight at all times
* Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations
* Don't fly within 5 miles of an airport unless you contact the airport and control tower before flying
* Don't fly near people or stadiums
* Don't fly an aircraft that weighs more than 55 lbs
* Don't be careless or reckless with your unmanned aircraft – you could be fined for endangering people or other aircraft

The statutory parameters of a model aircraft operation are outlined in Section 336 of Public Law 112-95 (the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012) (PDF). Individuals who fly within the scope of these parameters do not require permission to operate their UAS; any flight outside these parameters (including any non-hobby, non-recreational operation) requires FAA authorization. For example, using a UAS to take photos for your personal use is recreational; using the same device to take photographs or videos for compensation or sale to another individual would be considered a non-recreational operation.
hobby rc heli model, no "drone" aka "UAS".

I was an early adopter and have been flying quadcopters/uav's/drones for over five years. We have been through several periods over the years of trying to change the public's use of the word "drone" and go with Quadcopter/UAV etc... There has been little to no success as the public just calls them drones, right or wrong. Also, try telling someone you fly rc drones or rc AUV's or UAS's and guess which one they understand without a ten minute discussion? So, I know what they really are and I really don't care what anyone calls them. In fact the word Drone looks better for club names, advertising, promotion etc... I have other bigger battles in life I will devote my time to fighting.

What battle?
I just think your Quadcopter/UAV should be on there own fourm.
To me, Helis and drones even though alike in many ways are very different.
I like the skill it takes to fly a heli and really don't like being mixed in with drones. So far they have just caused problems and soon will for those that fly helis too. Why not keep the plank, truck, boat, rocket, kite, etc hobbies all separate. Just my opinion..

Its all earth!

Sorry rpat

But I have to disagree
It is boring

I only watched about half of the vid

but what alan is doing there doesn't require 25% of his skill level to do

When he does that with a heli its a whole lot different story

I have flown several quads and I don't have anywhere near the skills of alan

but I can do most all of that

ageing is manditory maturity is optional

I own a Leap, pretty much bought one as soon as they came out. If you think it's easy to fly then I'd suggest you haven't flown one. I enjoy flying this quad, it is a challenge, as any of the true 3D quads that don't have any self leveling or GPS or any other guidance.

I'm thinking about buying a Yuneec 500 4k also - a good camera platform would be nice to have.
