I wondering if ??
They have some credible evidence sum one is testing making drone ieds. Why all this new tech to drop drones taking pics ?? I mean we had sum bad nuts taking pic s to close to NYC buildings and crashing. A couple flying camera quads near DC. A couple close calls in air space ?? But I am not seeing the need to build a ray gun to drop them out of space ?? That is WHY I m wondering if they ve got credible evidence Drawings, vids of a quad bearing a ied ??? Makes u wonder if we got idiots like the wad on a quad, that a 140 lbs but registering a quad is gonna be point less since u can make a quad from spare parts ?? Same as a gun ?? Clueless politicians ?? What a waste of time ?? I don't mind belonging to the AMA hopefully we will be grandfathered into what ever they legislate I firmly believe that a rc pilot should be insured if you fly at a club or school field. If you own 5 acres n have room to fly safely then you should still belong. Maybe a rate reduction. I firmly believe that you should be able to pilot a rc craft with out stabilization to be licensed. Which should be proven to a AMA flight instructor. And maybe a >18 need parental compliance. I am willing to negotiate these terms as I do see a problem but a over all registry won't prevent stupid flying a quad to picture his shore house next to small airport. I do think all flying rc should bear you name pilot info so it can be tracked. Mine do AMA #. Plus ident markings for theft.
I would love to see a rc based pinger to ident to local vfr our wear about s weather it be telemetry to ground then broad cast out since a air based platform would be weight costly. I probally just gave away three big company's ideas but I see it happening now as they just hit the ap with the huge fine. So a GPS n altitude telem broadcasted to local vfr through ground based which needs a VHF 2 way communications. I would love to make it just wish jr would send me a pm I got ideas which would make everyone compliant

What does this mean for us as long time hobbiest pilots .

I have over 40 different aircraft planes and helicopters, but none that I consider a drone, no Quad copters/multi rotors.
I only fly LOS.

I fly at my local club fields and my residential airstrip home where I have permission to fly the neighbors here know and expect that I may be in the air at times.

We have an established LH pattern which requires full scale aircraft to only takeoff/land in one direction due to terrain, trees and other obstacles in the approach path .

Will this require me to register all 40-60 plane/helis and the kits and partial kits that may be made flight worthy in a few hours/days.
What about my balsa pile or box of helicopter parts ?? does that also need to be registered !

Also just went and checked why is there no new or info about this on the ama website

wife says if i'm going to be an addict at least its to a heli

idea of registration
you know who to thank
perhaps AMA S.C.
(f) Ensure the aircraft is identified with the name and address or AMA number of the owner on the inside or affixed to the outside of the model aircraft. (This does not apply to model aircraft flown indoors.)

Alright. This is one of several threads I've run into recently on this topic.

Here is the deal. If you are willing to follow the rules established defining a "Model RC Aircraft", you are -wait for it- flying a Model RC Aircraft. You are a modeler. Just go fly. Have fun.

If you would like to do something outside the defining guidelines of a Model RC Aircraft, you are - drum roll please - flying a Drone.

This is from FAA website: https://www.faa.gov/uas/model_aircraft/
It roughly defines what is a model airplane. Be sure and read the first sentence. If you really want to know more, click on the links and read them.

The importance is that some people will wish to use a Remotely Piloted Vehicles for any number of purposes that are NOT in compliance with the definition of a Model Aircraft.

People wishing to operate outside the guidelines of a Model Aircraft can now legally do so. That is good news.

That doesn't mean you can go out and buy a DJI Phantom and insistently begin a photography/videopraphy business. You will not be able to fly a model aircraft as a drone without first meeting the requirements of the FAA. That also is good news. It is why we are modelers and why there isn't a "modeler" or "hobbyist" flying over this weekend's NASCAR race. There may be a "Drone" that looks a lot like a DJI Phantom at this weekend's track meet, but it will not be a modeler or hobbyist operating it. It will be certified, licensed, registered, drone operator.

"Model RC Aircraft",
NPRM
Proposed rule would not apply to model aircraft that satisfy all of the criteria specified in Section 336 of Public Law 112-95.

Even the rules/reqs that were linked to by revmix are difficult to understand and do not totally seem to put hobbiest in the clear .

Have to remember, this is DOT not FAA... so it is like having to register a car. So there are a lot of questions...

How can you differentiate between plane and multi-rotor. Essentially both could be used for the same purpose. For example to spy on the neighbors, or launch an attack... etc.

It should be interesting tomorrow... be prepared to register each box of balsa in your basement. That stick of Birch could be a prop, so better sign that up too. Maybe this will lead to an accurate count of how many planes that I actually have in my basement.

All scale aircraft and pilots are registered with both the Dot and Faa.
as a matter of fact the Faa is part of the Dot. nothing new.
So it will not be like registering a car. It will be like registering an aircraft.

Dammit. It's 70 degrees and bright sunshine and I just wasted 45 minutes watching the press conference.

It sounded like they had formed a task force to discuss the requirement of "drone" registration but had already decided that registration was going to happen. The task force seems to have been formed to write the terms of surrender - not the surrender itself.

And they want to have the task force complete their recommendations by Nov 20 and regulations in place by Christmas.

No hint was given as to defining what is a drone and what is a model aircraft.

On and on it goes...
