I bought a can of motor spray. I spray into a paper towel until it runs clean. hen I re-lube the motor on both ends(tough to do on some motors without the back-shaft showing ).

me i plug the motor to a battry pack and drop the turning motor in a can of electric motor cleaner and let it turn for a minute and after that it's pretty clean. If no motor cleaner is available use water but dry your engine after or it will eventualy rust.

Yeah,

I have used soapy water, and dried in a warm oven.

The important things are:
1) whatever you use does not attack the materials of the motor.
2) It does not leave a conductive residue
3) you lube it when you are done.

I would excercise extreme caution putting a running, sparking, motor into any liquid that may be flammable.
